My Ride: 2001 BMW 330ci
Is this caliper piston OK or should I go new?

I am rebuilding my calipers and the attached image is of one of the pistons. Overall it is in great shape except for the edge near the end of the dust boot. I expect that since it's near the outer edge it should be fine but looking for some confirmation from the forum. I really don't want to reassemble this if it's not going to function 100%.

That corrosion means that the seal allowed brake fluid and moisture to seep into the cylinder. What's the condition of the caliper cylinder?

How long do you plan on keeping the car? If your answer is more than a year I recommend you buy and install rebuilt calipers. They don't cost very much as you send the vendor your old calipers.

These pix show why the brake fluid needs to be flushed every 2 years at a minimum.

The cylinders look perfect inside and the dust boot was not compromised . I am not the original owner and I change fluid twice a year since I track it. Since I track the car, the brakes need to function well regardless of how long I keep the car, so I am fine with the investment. However, I don't see a reason to buy a whole new caliper if I can just replace the seal, dust boot, and piston. Also the other caliper piston is perfect so I really only need to replace one piston vs 2 calipers since they should be done in pairs.

But I guess the point is that this piston needs to be replaced, correct?

The other side looks perfect, but I think I should change them in pairs. I am actually amazed at how good the calipers held up given the age of the car and 231k miles.
