Kinda difficult to compare a 15 year old car to a new car.

An older car will inherently have issues, even with lower miles.

The write up previous posts back is very well said. As mentioned, the fit and finish of the BMW will be better, even being old. And let's be honest, the M3 is a more attractive car.

I was in a similar situation. I needed to replace my E36 with something more reliable. I looked at new cars. They were all very nice, but I couldn't get myself to commit to the payments on a $20k+ car and the pressure from the sales person is just too much. I couldn't just look.

I ended up finding my E46. It's a beautiful car, cost a helluva lot less than something new, and looks better than every car in the $20k range (new) and has much more power than a 140hp 4cyl most smaller cars came with. Granted, I am spending some dollars fixing this 15 year old car, but I do enjoy it, and it comes with the territory of an older vehicle.

I would opt for the M3, but only if you plan on doing the maintenance yourself. If you want something fun, turnkey for the next few years, go with the BRZ.

M3 will have a lot more power - but what is the speed limit in Canada ? Are you
Going to the track ? Maintenance will be a lot more expensive - not sure about insurance ? Brz is a little underpowered but a fun drive and handles well. I would also vote for a WRX in Canada however - with good snow tires for the winter for dd !
