guys, i need your help urgently!
i was doing one of the easiest DIYs and ended up making, what i think, could be the costliest of screwups.

i was doing the oil and oil filter change DIY on my '02 325i. i went below the car. removed the crash guard covering the fuel filter and stuff....but, i couldn't locate the 17mm bolt for the oil pan anywhere......i was blind may be........after all the search i found a pan that looked to me like "oil pan".......this had a drain plug.........which was a Torx 40........i never realized what i was getting into.....i opened the screw and drained all the oil..........thatz not the end.......i went on to fill 7 cans of engine oil in the engine........i drove the car for 2 miles may be......it was jerking.........i didn't know what was happening.....then it showed a
"! D" symbol on the dash.....after this i drove may be 500 feet and parked the car in my friend's parking lot............now,
1. my car has double quantity of engine oil (don't know what the old was already in there......i added MOBIL 1 5-w30).......and
2. there is no ATF at all......

please, please, please help me out of this.........thanks a million in advance......you guys are great....

on a side note: a girl had her mitsubishi eclipse towed into my buddies shop. complaining the car wouldnt start. come to find out the engine seized. cause she bought it and drove around 46k without ever changing the oil. dropped pan and it was bone dry. she said she didnt know she had to change the oil. lol. repair cost 3800 for engine replacement from junkyard. my public service announcement if you dont know what your doing take it to a mechanic screw ups can be very costly. we see at least 1 diy screw up every week and it is usually 2-3x more costly to "fix the repair" than it would of been to just have it done in the first place.

What tranny fluid did he refill it with? Do you even know what tranny you have and what fluid it takes?

I'm sure you had more than 1 quart of ATF in there when you drained it. Since you did a simple drain and didn't drop the pan, you probably lost 3-4 quarts. There's probably still more ATF in the torque converter and the filter to do too much damage.

The Vavoline MaxLife Dex/Mercon ATF fluid covers most of the e46 trannies.

You don't want to drain and refill it too quickly. Changing it frequently will shock the system and make things worst.

i seriously don't know for sure. i asked him a few times....but, he refused to tell me what exactly he put in there.......i was so scared before i went there......and all of a sudden so relieved by his positive news that i didn't want to create a fuss there......so, i left.....i know it wasn't a good idea.....but, what to do.....? i did it.....already.

so, now what do you think i should do?

ok, let me tell you what i want to do..........now that the car is in running condition, i want to find a BMW Tranny specialist here in SoCal and take the car to him.........i will narrate the whole story to him and ask him what he thinks......i want to ask him to drive the car with(out) me so he knows what i am talking about......

does that sound right? thanks for your help so far. :thanks:
