and you never know, i could see the car being a great platform for racing teams, and since a car like that will never be driven on the streets it wouldn't be hard at all to import one.

yeah but for the price, 115,000 euros.. its almost enough to buy a base f430/gallardo, a porsche gt3rs, a down payment on a house, etc etc
paying $170,000 for a bmw is like paying $100,000 for the honda/acura nsx or $80,000 for a nissan

Of course, I couldn't tell that you have designed an airplane, but I could at least infer that you knew (or at least had an idea of) what you were talking about. Also, explain to me what you meant by "wanker"

also i was really hoping you'd argue with me about aerodynamics, hoping for an amusing answer, but then again not everyone on the internet is as stupid as going nuts so i probably wouldn't get the funny answer i'd hope for ![]() and okay i'll relax now.

A few important points: 1) You've built an airplane. 2) I'm not an aerodynamics engineer 3) Yes, I have track experience, but I (presumably) have VERY basic aerodynamic knowledge in comparison to you I know how to pick my battles - it would be idiotic to try to argue with you over the concepts of aerodynamic theory. Don't worry, though - I'm sure you'll have the chance to argue with someone on this board... there are lots of "them" here. ![]()

^ This forum is ridiculous. Why to people take things so personally, or better yet, react so harshly to everything. It's the INTERNET. This is a car forum. Some people just need to know when to relax, or at least take their petty bickering into the form known as "Private Message", for all our sakes.

specs...
M3 GTS weights 1490 kg (3285 lbs), 419 lbs less than the stock M3 coupe’s 3704-lb curb weight. First deliveries are scheduled to begin in Germany next May, carrying a sticker price of 115,000 euros (about $170k). According to current planning, registrations in other countries will be possible from summer 2010.
______________________________ Exclusive 19-inch wheels with ample 225/35 tyres at the front and 285/30 at the rear catch your eye. All this is certainly nice looking and sensible, but what you glimpse through the spokes of the aluminium wheel rims is even more exciting: a generously sized fixed caliper brake system with six pistons at the front and four at the rear. The wheels almost fill out the wheel arches, but if you look closely you discover the next highlight. Yellow springs with a small M logo provide the crucial clue: a threaded suspension, adjustable in compression and rebound. “The rear axle support is bolted in place,” adds the responsible engineer. The expert will also spot the adjustable front splitter and rear wing. One thing is clear: this car is serious stuff. Not only can a high level of downforce be generated but it also precisely adjustable at front and rear. Fast bends can look forward to welcoming the BMW M3 GTS – but they won’t get to see it for long. “The serial production BMW M3 is already weight-optimised with a whole range of measures reserved for the BMW M3 CSL in the last model – the striking carbon lightweight roof, for example.” So the engineers had to get back to work again to come up with more. Light body-contoured seats are a must. A cluster of lightweight construction measures such as optimisation of the insulation, the use of lightweight parts in the interior, the use of Macrolon for the car’s windows in the back, the lack of air conditioning, navigation and radio and the entire rear seat also gets the scales the down. And the new titanium rear silencer not only looks great and contributes to the thrilling sound of the BMW M3 GTS, it is also much lighter than its serial production counterpart. Indispensable for safety reasons: the lightweight construction body has been prepared for installation of the 6-point seatbelt included for use on the race track. There are also mounts for the roll-over protective structure bolted on from the B column. A fire extinguisher and a battery master switch/emergency shut-off preparation do not make the car lighter either – but safer. So the BMW M3 GTS concept vehicle puts the scales up to around 1490 kilograms – causing the engineer to give an appreciative nod. And the drivetrain? The heart of the BMW M3 GTS? The car is fitted with a 7-speed M dual clutch transmission with adapted shift characteristics. But an absolute highlight is to be found under the bonnet. Exclusively for the BMW M3 GTS, the engine builders of BMW M – recent winners of the Engine of the Year Award once again – have developed a power unit based on the M high-performance engine of the current BMW M3: with a capacity of 4.4 litres and an output of some 450 bhp, it will catapult the light BMW M3 GTS into a whole new sphere. After all, the aim is to clearly beat the lap time of the legendary M3 CSL on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. And test runs certainly give grounds for optimism. |

CEO BMW M talks about the M3 GTS
Beside being a very charismatic person, Dr. Kay Segler is also a huge car enthusiast. Coming from the MINI brand where he oversaw the Coopers and Cooper S Works development, Segler took the reign at the Motorsport division in May 2009 and during this short period, two production M cars were launched, X5 M and X6 M, and also the one-off M5 “CSL”. While these projects started prior to his involvement at the M division, several new products under his command will be launched in the near future.
The fellows over at M-Power sat down with Dr. Segler for an interview on the new BMW M3 GTS and the future of his division. Just half a year has passed since he took up his position as CEO in May 2009, and the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M have been launched as new models during this period. So it’s time to ask Dr. Kay Segler where BMW M is heading. MPW: Dr. Segler, BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M deviate from a number of dogmas. Turbo, all-wheel drive, automatic transmission – is this the new M? Segler: We have to be free of dogmas, I ask this of every staff member. It has always been a strength of M to question everything in a positive way. MPW: Does that mean BMW M will be taking leave of longstanding beliefs? Segler: Cars are created differently now. We clearly define our goals, derive the product properties from these and then decide which technology appears to be the best suited to the purpose. MPW: Nonetheless, there are lots of customers who are very attached to tradition. What do you have to say to these fans? Segler: I will say that they will continue to get fascinating products from BMW M. And I am sure that this applies more than ever before. We don’t just listen to our customers: we also act on what they say. MPW: What does that mean in practical terms? Segler: The BMW M3 GTS which we are currently preparing in our BMW M production workshop is a response to frequently expressed customer wishes. This M3 is even hotter: lower weight, more power - including an increase in capacity - and lots of technical details which were only previously available on the tuning market, if at all. Complex and highly individual offers are available ex works. MPW: What other features does the BMW M3 GTS offer? Segler: We have a chassis which can be adjusted in compression and rebound, the car is fitted with a fixed caliper brake with six pistons at the front and four at the rear, and the rear silencer is made of titanium. The aerodynamics can be adjusted at the front and rear. We provide 6-point seatbelts for the racing bucket seats, a bolted roll-over protection structure is installed as is a fire extinguisher. MPW: A nice package which ought to have a broad appeal. Segler: Yes, I strongly believe it will. If there is a detail here or there which is not to somebody’s liking, that’s not the end of the world. What we are presenting is a standard configuration. If necessary, we are flexible enough to respond to specific requests, too. After all, these vehicles are built in the BMW M production workshops - where we built the M3 GT4, too. MPW: Was that what sparked off the idea for the M3 GTS? Segler: Partly, yes. We’ve known about fans who would like more for a long time now. There are some who would like a model which is even closer to motor racing. They want to drive the car to the race track, take part in a race and then drive home again - theoretically that is possible with the BMW M3 GTS. That’s the classic club sports idea, if you like. But collectors will also be interested in this fascinating automobile. MPW: This brings us to an important point. What is the price and how can I order the M3 GTS? Segler: The price for the standard configuration is 115,000 euros in Germany. Deliveries will begin next spring. MPW: What else can we expect from BMW M in the near future? Segler: Our leitmotif is: “Automobile dreams come true”. The M3 GTS sends out a clear signal here. The X5 M and X6 M have just gone out to dealerships and round off the top of our product range. But what I would most like to see is for BMW M to stay a young brand within people’s reach. This is why a product below the BMW M3 more important to me than a super sports car which is only accessible to a few. As I have already mentioned in other interviews, we are currently looking closely at the options in this area. I hope to be able to tell you more the next time we speak. MPW: Dr. Segler, thank you very much for the interview. |
