I used this fix on my '02 M3: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/262483...-series/page-2. It simply reinforces the rear deck.

Basically you:
- Remove the subwoofer enclosure
- Locate a hole dead center in the deck where the enclosure is mounted
- Attach a bolt with 2 nuts (basically sandwiching the deck between the nuts) and crank it down
- Enjoy some rattle free bass.

I'm sure that the t-shirt/tennis ball/polyester fill fixes work great, but this fix has the advantage of keeping the enclosure characteristics the same.

I was looking into replacing my rear HK speakers and forgot I did this fix when I first got my car

Thanks Lugnut, I am NOT a DIY type of guy, and your guide gave me the confidence to do this, The only thing I didn't like when I got my M was the rattle. I used tennis balls instead of the polyester, mainly because I know where the sporting goods store is and have no idea where the polyester batting store is. Took me all of 15 minutes, and $6 (tennis balls, 8mm wrench). And FYI I decided on Dunlop tennis ball over Wilson, since they make tires and therefore must make better e46 trunk rattle reducing tennis balls.
