I've done 3 events so far. Being an HPDE kind of guy it wasn't a huge transition, but it was definitely different. I don't know what type of layout your event will have, but it's going to be hard not to fail with an open diff unless it's very low speed stuff. I'm using a welded 3.46 and it's been working very well so far.
What suspension setup are you running? Lower and stiffer is better, especially for that open diff. Since you can't power over or clutch kick it to initiate the slide, you're going to have to carry a lot of speed on entry and you'll have to flick it to get the rear end out with momentum. If you have absolutely no drift experience I'd suggest you start slow and get used to how the car feels sideways for extended periods of time.
So over the past weeks Ive been doing my research. I spoke too Ray at Kaaz LSD's and will be ordering a 1.5way kaaz along with a 3.46 diff.
As far as my suspension setup goes now Im running BC coils/camber plates (8kg/10kg), all new front control arms w/ melye bushing, Velocity rear adjustable control arms. Im ordering hotchks Sways this week as well:thumbsup:
Now do you currently have your subframe reinforced? Im a little worried about that and considering getting the turner reinforcement kit.
Yeah dude, it kind of sucks in parking lots. Everyone stares at me while the car hops around corners lol It's so worth it though. I can't afford to do a lot of the DE's I want to, but a full day of drifting is only $40.
I didn't weld mine, I traded a used PS pump to a local for his welded 3.46.
 Hahah Thanks man. Even with the beating she looks great. What did you do with your headlights in your sig? You just painted the bowls and the shrouds?
Yeah two years ago on the way home from 4ngiefest in Atlanta we stopped at the Summit Racing store and I got some "gold anodized look" spray made by VHT. Everyone always just sprayed the bowls, but I went for the shrouds as well to try and get that e30 look lol
I do have a custom reinforcement kit that was done by AA a long time ago. It's not the same as the modern TMS kits so it was a bit more expensive. The shop I work with now does the TMS kit with install and powerflex subframe/rtab bushings for $1200.
Mmmmm.... I like this thread! Fellow drifter here.. Just swapped diffs recently. Put a welded 3.38 in so I wouldn't have to mess with the input shaft.. (6-bolt 330i, ugh) So far so good. driven plenty of welded diffs before so it really doesn't bother me. Like Activ3 said, it's really only noticible in parking lots. I'm from TN, anyone other drifters on here in or around TN? If so I'll send over my drift organization's schedule!! We're a real fun laid-back group. I'm pretty new to this forum and BMW's in general, so I'm looking forward to some nice info-sharing.
It's been rainy here in TN, so I've been taking a few "detours" on the way home, but there's not an event until next month. I've been stocking up on tires for it though... I'll let you know how it turns out.
I'll be sure to take pictures and some video. I have a Hero cam with a suction cup mount which I love. I'm a 240 drifter (I know, I know...), but I'll be out there with some sideways german four door craziness without a doubt! (Honestly, the 330i has 2842985308 times more power than my 240 but is much harder to slide. It just wants to go fast, straight! Need some adjustable sways bigtime.) Looove sliding it regardless!!
Awsome (all drifters welcome here haha). Im still in the building process. Getting my subframe reinforced soon and diff/lsd setup shortly. Also looking into cage options... then it'll be ready) Did all the other suspension mods already ( Full Adj Coilovers / Adj Sway Bars / Front+Rear Control Arms ) When I bring in the car for the subframe work, Ill be doing upgraded subframe bushings as well.
sick ride! does that hydraulic ebrake just engage the normal rear brakes?
don't know how i missed this thread, but i'm going out a dry lake bed this weekend to go drift around.
I find that faster... 2nd/3rd gear stuff is very do able with no lsd, however when i try to get into the more technical stuff, as solemn or even slower transitions (transitions in general... but i think the faster stuff is just because my skill level isn't that great yet). Its hard for me to even get into the 2nd gear figure 8s.
here are just a few pics of my last event!
full opp lock
wet skidpad ftw.
i'm absolutely dying for lsd! i missed out on that one in classifieds a month ago.
some people say it will put stress on the axle and snap.
some say the whole rear end gets fked up.. idk ..
how long ago was your diff welded?
ahha cheapest way..
