Can I use an E36 Gearbox in a E46

I have a 2000 BMW 323i Auto with the GM ZF transmission and I was wondering if I can use an E36 gearbox from an earlier year? My car has an E36 engine (M52TUB25) common in the E36 years so the question is worth a shot and if so where is a good DIY on it? Thanks guys.

Is the E36 trans the same model number as the E46 trans?

If you were looking to swap in a manual trans from the e36, I think you'd have a much better bet. The auto might be able to be flashed and might have the same connectors; but that's pretty questionable.

As for the engine, no, you do not have an e36 engine, there are some significant differences from the M52B25 and the M52TUB25, the latter being far more similar to the M54 than the M52.
