325i wont start- please help

Hello,

My car (automatic 2001 325i, my first car/first bmw) was sounding rough, like an old boat. It was driving fine, just sounded terrible.

Reading the CEL, I had 2 misfires, so I replaced the misfiring coils and all the spark plugs because they were overdue.

This is where it gets fun- it wouldn't start after doing these installs. After consulting a few forums and youtube, I decided the replace the fuel pump and filter....but of course it still doesn't start, after putting in a new battery, same thing, engine wont start.

Any advice for a first time poster?

Does the car have power? Does it just not turn over? I would go back and make sure all your connections are good on your ignition coils and in that general area.

Thanks for the reply

The connections all look good to me, I know I'm getting fuel to the engine because it shoots out of the schraeder valve.

I'm gonna check to see if my spark plugs are sparking correctly tonight by grounding them and having someone turn the key. wish me luck

Any other advice is appreciated

Try holding your gas pedal to the floor for about 30 seconds to 60 seconds. You could have flooded the engine.

Check your battery voltage.

Sorry for the barrage of stupid questions but I'm an amateur.

When should I hold down the gas pedal? When turning the key? BC I tried that...no luck.

The battery is brand new, so it shouldn't be a problem.

What makes you think its flooded? The fact that it was making a noise before or now that it wont start?

And what can I do to fix it if it is flooded?

thanks man

I thought it might be flooded because you changed the fuel pump and spark plugs and it did not start.

Check your battery voltage and report back to us.

Re-read your obd engine codes

Verify your new fuel pump is priming when you turn your key on.

Check your E-box fuses for a blown fuse. E-box fuses are under the black box cover in the left side rear of the engine compartment.

I'll check the e box and get back to you.
It was driving fine for a week, aside from the noise it was making. Would that still sound like a fuse issue?

Check your alternator. We have an X5 that did that and it was that causing the battery to be dead.

If it is cranking - then battery (and alternator) should be good. You seem to have fuel and spark. Next place to look would be connection to crankshaft and camshaft positions sensors. Plug and unplug them again - I'm not sure on our engines how close those are to the coil wiring. You could still have a bad CPS - but wiring is first and easy thing to check. You could also have some other vacuum leak - search this forum for how to do smoke test. There are probably a few other things to check next that could cause a no-start - disconnect MAF and see if that make a difference, TPS, etc. but I will defer to more experienced BMW mechanic to advise you what is next to check on the list ...

Either you worked on the car with the key on or you may have a wire issue where there is a short somewhere.

Take note of the 2 fuses you replaced.

Do you happen to know what those fuses control?

theres no label under the fuse box lid, but I found this online: http://www.chitownm.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4284

I know the diagram looks like its from an M car, but I'm looking in my Bentley manual and for fuse carrier A8680, it only shows 4 fuses.

Again its both 30a fuses on the ends of the unit labeled motor-sicherungen
