I have two M52s, and no t-stat troubles. I also had an M50 with no t-stat troubles, and now have a second M50 that I just replaced the t-stat because it stuck open.

Stuck open is a better failure than stuck closed, and I've had those before -- but not on a BMW.

Slower to warm up and didn't quite make it to half way so replaced immediately.

Original thermostat stuck in "up" position after 9 years. Was diagnosed by "Service Engine Soon" code and electronic code reader. Indie shop replaced it, part was about $60, not sure what brand they used. No damage to car that I know of, apparently getting stuck in the "up" position had a cooling instead of overheating effect.

I bought an m54 from a dealer that took it in on trade with an open thermostat. Otherwise, I have not experienced a failed thermostat on my two e39s or three e46s.

I've changed mine once. It was stuck open in summer so I didn't know for a little, so no big deal.

The one I have in now looks like its going to need to be replaced soon. See some grimy mist around it. My PS lines are leaking more so that's the main focus.

My Ride: 2003 330xi Automatic
My car has over 215,000 miles on it and I just got a thermostat failure and had it replaced. Would stay open causing the car not to warm up properly. Now it appears to work flawlessly. I'm not the original owner of course, so who knows how many t-stats its had since it was born.
