Time for engine #3...

So as the title says, my 2nd engine that I put in my 2004 325xi has gone. R.I.P.

I debated on putting this in the engine swap forum, but decided to stay here.

I believe the head gasket has gone unfortunately, I will make a different thread somewhere else discussing why I believe this to be true. Then I will post the link on this thread later...

So, my question is. Can I just buy a RWD "I" engine and swap over the components? What needs to be swapped over?

Off the top of my head:

Oil pan
Pickup tube
Differential
Axles Obviously...

Dipstick?

What else am I missing?

I can just run the XI DME right, that part is fine, no need to tamper with?

If anybody has done this I would appreciate some clarification, I have searched around but found no defiant answers.

Thanks in advance,

-Gbro

Well i know for the 330xi you can swap the engine from an i. You'll just have to change the oil pan and the dipstick, i believe. Other than that, as long as it's the same engine code (i.e: m54b30 ) then you shouldn't have to change any electronics. If you have the extra cash you should look into swapping a 3.0 in there. Shouldn't be a a major jump in price besides getting the ecu, Dme, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, this is my first post lol

Same problem looking for advice

Need some advice
Subject: 2004 325XI
In the middle of a 4 hour drive today, I lost compression in #6 cylinder
after diagnosing looks like Head needs to come off. Car has 180K
and is in great shape & always well maintained.
is it best to redo head, Or try and find a low milage engine?
also, approx time to do both jobs?
I havenít been able to find any post on engine swaps for the XI.

Thanks, Shane

Yes you can just get a RWD engine

All you need to swap is

Motor mount arms
Oil Pan
Dip stick tube

Everything else will be able to bolt right up.

You might want to take this opportunity to buy a 330 engine to replace your 325 engine. Its a direct drop in and they can be had for the same amount of money these days as a 325 engine.

Thanks for the response.
I would but then, I would have to get the transmission and the Front and Rear diffs. I think the transfer case is the same though. If I could find a whole parts car I would.

I was thread jacked lol. Car had about 247K when it blew the head gasket, then swapped another in with about the same mileage because I had it laying around, and now it needs another one (Head gasket again I suspect)... I will definitely get a lower mileage one this time around.
