Manual Swap Using a 330xi 6speed transmission

Hello,
I have a 97 328is with a vf engineering supercharger kit. Fun car but the only drawback is that it's an automatic. I have been slowly collecting all the parts I need to do the conversion. I recently came across a great deal on a 6speed Trans from a 330xi. I am trying to quickly verify what would be involved in configuring the trans for rwd only.
1. Is it as simple as removing the transfer gears...I am assuming I would have to disable the drive to the front shaft.
2. Or would I have to lock/weld(?) The center diff?
3. Does anyone know what the difference if any of the drives haft length between the e36 and e46 (330xi drives haft won't come with the trans so I would need to source something....hopefully not custom)?

As I said I got a good deal but at the same time I do not want to purchase it if it not workable...just want to get some feedback as to what would be involved.

I'm in the same boat dude. I'm wondering if you can't just remove the transfer case like on almost every vehicle I've seen.

you always can look at realoem.com and verify the driveshaft length

Well I picked up the transmission yesterday so no turning back. I plan to take the transfer case apart this weekend. I did confirm that if you just bolted everything up in rwd mode without removing the gears going to the front, you would not get any drive to the rear
....not sure how to post pictures on here

Money and availability is my guess. I found one around here for 300 finding a normal 6 speed is at least 3x much

then i would just go 5 speed.. i have the 6 speed 330 and 5 speed 330 and i can live with the 5 speed.. if you want cheaper then get the getdrag 250 from e36 then that's more cheaper the e46 ZF's

but if this works then a cheaper (but more work involved) 6 speed alternative..

I got a good deal on the xi transmission so that is the main reason. I specifically wanted a 6speed so I will have a overdrive to maintain decent highway cruising speeds even with an aggressive final drive. Car has a supercharger and I have no plans for a power increase, so a 6speed with a 3.4x+ lsd should be more than enough.
I don't mind a challenge either...obviously the easy way to go is a rwd 6speed or better yet a 5speed...so no need to reiterate that...already bought the xi Trans
I made a replica Evo iii the hard way before doing the awd conversion using the Eclipse drivetrain and suspension instead of imported jdm parts...so I am not afraid of some fab work.
My restoration of my '79 grey market 635csi will be much more difficult than this swap.

Maybe it would be better to sell that transmission to a 5-speed / auto xi owner for normal price and then use the funds to buy a RWD six speed.

I should have an update by the end of the weekend. I pulled off the transfer case and it was only then I realized the the two units are completely sealed (Trans and transfer case). With the transfer case removed the transmission looks a LOT like the rwd trans! There is an adapter that goes over what I hope is the same spline output shaft of the rwd setup...which would technically mean that I just need to replace the adapter with a rwd flange and I am done....man that would be too easy!
I could even sell the transfer case.
I will know more tomorrow

the bell housing is different between the two. you have to use an xi specific clutch. you also need a rwd adapter for the drive shaft.

Clutch disc is the same. Pressure plate is different, but I'm not sure what the difference is. The shape looks more or less the same to me. Maybe a little bit more clamping force for the all wheel drive?

I think I have a solution that allows for the complete elimination of the transfer case. With the transfer case removed, the splined shaft that is exposed is the same size as the splined flange of a rwd auto mid 2000s 5 series...the bangle , one after the e39 (i am assuming pretty common...the 5 was just what was available ). i will post details with pics later
