Excellent suggestion. I just pumped out the first resevoir full, refilled and it was silent without a rattle....so flushed out twice more. The first lot of oil was very dark. I guess the next job is to replace the resevoir as thats cheepish and will provide a new filter.

I started looking at hose prices and they are unbelievably expensive....the low pressure only 46 ($70) and the high pressure 230 ($354). Throw in resevoir , cooler pipe and oil I would have spent 400+ ($600+). Apparently over here you can't get aftermarket power steering hoses, at least so I found, which meant the dreaded BMW parts department.

So a happy ending and my wife gets her car back. Now all I have to do is replace my clutch slave cylinder on my MGB V8 which went at the exact same time and I too am mobile.

Many thanks for your fix.

Regards Ian

I had a leak on my wife's xi and replaced the high pressure line for about $70 from Rock Auto, IDK if they ship international or what it would add to the price if they do. Not a hard job but lots of stuff to get out of the way to get at the pump. Should have done the OFHG right away, but didn't and ended up doing it two weeks later anyway.

It is hard to believe that refreshed fluid stopped all the noise and vibration. I assume that it probably did the pump no good so I will check it out to see if the bearings at least sound/feel ok. the Impeller is a bit more difficult. I need to see which pump I have because from what I have read if its an LUK 20 it gets replaced with a LUK 30 which has diffent pipe connection points....so I need the right high pressure pipe I will check out Rock Auto as the shipping and tax can't be $250.
The worrying thing is that the same lifetime oil is in the automatic gearbox which I was going to flush out and replace the filter in the spring.

Found Rock Auto in the UK and the parts are massively cheaper than BMW. I had never heard of them before but at least replacing the hoses and even the pump is not going to more than the car is worth.

Again many thanks for the information.

Well the steering was fine for about 1500miles following syphoning the fluid out and then the pump broke. So I guess it was warning. I flushed out the old fluid and replaced the reservoir as there was metal in the old fluid.
The hardest part of swapping the pumps was getting the fan belt back on. Those tensioners are stiff.
