Rumored: BMW teams up with McLaren to build a supercar

BMW used to supply the V12 engines for the McLaren's F1 team. Now it's looking like they are working together again, only this time, on a high-powered supercar project.

According to a Car Magazine article, BMW and McLaren have been throwing ideas around since January. With some new blood in a few key positions at BMW, the ball is rolling and a mid-engined supercar could be unveiled in Frankfurt in as little as two years.

For this project, BMW will again be bringing the power, however, this time in the form of a 4 liter V8. The V8 will find its 750 horsepower with the help of some boost. 'Output would be boosted by no fewer than four chargers; two exhaust-driven, two powered by electric motors. Insiders claim a plug-in hybrid is not on the agenda. Mid-term, anything is possible, but for 2018 expect start/stop, brake energy regeneration and at best a mild 15kW hybrid boost.' The powerplant will be housed in a McLaren built, carbon fiber monocoque chassis. The chassis will also underpin McLaren's next gen 650S.

'Differentiated exterior designs would separate the two supercars. With start of production pencilled in for late 2018, there's just about time to accommodate BMW's needs within the P16's architecture. Done right, the matrix should be sufficiently modular to cater for brand-specific hang-on panels, door treatments and aero concepts. BMW's wishlist also includes a bespoke instrument panel, as well as infotainment, connectivity and driver assistance features it would share with McLaren, if so desired. BMW is not looking for an overly ambitious volume: three digits will suffice each year.'

This one seems to have some good momentum, let's hope they follow through.

I was surprised by the statement and my quick research bears this out -- BMW never supplied engines to Team McLaren for FIA Formula One competition use.

BMW did supply the S70/2 V12 to McLaren Cars for the "McLaren F1" road/track car, this must be what the confusion stems from.

Well, the McLaren F1 was built by their F1 team, since, well, thats the only "team" that McLaren had at the time, so, I guess it is a term that could be loosely used. But yes, it does sound like they are implying that they supplied formula 1 engines.
