Repost: The pictures of the Blown SMG M3 Engine(Owner is now allowing me to post pics
The owner of the M3 is now allowing me to post the pictures again, so here they are of the blown SMG M3 motor. Here is the description from the original post :
Well.............I first asked you guys about blown SMG motors 2 or 3 days ago, in this thread. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...?threadid=2448 I didn't have any response regarding the issue. Well........my questions were answered today. I went to a track event today, and sure enough, there was an E46 SMG M3. Twenty minutes into his first run; boom, white smoke out of the engine and oil everywhere. I spoke a lot with the driver, and he said that he was accelerating. Not shifting gears and not braking. He was nice enough to allow me to take digital pictures, so I took a lot. I felt so badly for him. He drove a couple of hours to the track, got 20 minutes of time in, and then had to ride home w/ a tow truck driver. IMHO, BMW needs to do a little more quality control on the ///Ms. I know clutches seem to be the weakest link in the M5s. In any event, back to the M3. Well......under the hood, you can see red fluid over by the master cylinder and intake plumbing area, as well as on the inside of the hood itself. I believe that when the engine blew, the pressure must have also blown off a part of the power steering line and/or pump. There isn't much oil visible in the engine pictures, but the entire floorpan of the engine was filled with oil, and you can see what the tow truck looked like that brought the M3 off of the track. It is covered in oil as well. The car had 5k miles on it. Another SMG M3 did the same thing on Wednesday of last week, at the same track. And yet another SMG is in the shop for having it happen while he was driving on the street. Not goooooood BMW. :-( |

Man........ he should come up with a story..... .something other then being at the track.
If memory serves me right, the M3's have a memory that can be checked to see if the motor was being rev'ed beyond redline. So the dealer will be able to check the car and see if it was being abused by the owner.

Yeah but supposedly a SMG car should not be able to be reved beyond redline, sounds like a design issue to me

Thanks for the heads up!
Im getting my M3 in 2 months. Im going to rev the hell out of it like it was meant and hyped to be driven. I guess I wont cancel my AAA Roadside service afterall.
If my engine blows, you all can watch the news about a disgruntled M3 owner going postal at a Bay Area dealership. |

It's sux that you have to worry about engine failure while you driving a M3. Never heard of anything like that on other E46s.
