A nice '98 M3 is a highly desirable car, but there are VERY few nice e36 M3s left out there. Most of them have been thrashed. Even if it is in great shape, you will spend $3k-$4k a year to keep it up if you use it as a daily driver, so the initial cost is not your biggest concern.

That number? Well, let's see. Counting the e36s I gave to my kids, I currently own four 3-series BMWs, ranging in mileage from 150k to 325k. First one purchased 16 years ago and we still have it. Before the BMWs I drove Volvos for 20 years and did all my own work on them. I also help friends care for their 3s and 5s. I love these things, but I don't kid myself about what it costs to keep an older sports car running well. Now, if you want a REAL money pit, a co-worker of mine recently convinced his wife to let go of her M5 before it bankrupted them.

I wanted to know exactly where you spend that 3-4k a year on an e36 M3 that is, in your words, in great shape. Sorry, that figure doesn't make sense.

Yeah, I have to say that doesn't sound right to me either, the U.S. M3 is basically a glorified 328. I bought a ratted out 325i and spent less than 1000 a year (not including oil or tires) and I purchased brand name parts. Even if you double that for the m3. Your still spending less than 2000 a year... The first year may be different as you fix delayed maintenance, but it should be fine. And will be less than working on the e46, at least from my experience.
