Bmw e46 2001 model battery

Hye guys im planning of switching steering wheels from my 2001 bmw e46 , and To do thatneed to disconnect the battery cause of the airbag . If i disconnect the battery for a long time while i lose some of the cars setting ?

so i can turn off the battery for a long period of time , then when i turn it back on the trip mileage and time will reset ? cause i haired that you need to take it to a BMW specialist to re program everything after a long period of time that why im asking thanks a lot for you help

Yes, it's safe to disconnect power for a long time. All important settings are stored in nonvolatile memory chips inside the respective modules.

No need to go to a BMW specialist after disconnecting the battery.

When you take the negative cable off, tuck it down between the battery and the body. You don't want it to leave it on top of the battery - it may "creep" back towards the negative terminal on the battery and could make unexpected contact while you are working in the front seat.

I have been testing my battery recently and unhooked it several times for extended periods. I can confirm the only apparent things that reset are the clock and trip meter. Other modules or systems may reset, but you'll never notice.
