Only had the car for about 8 months, no I haven't but I have been fixing everything else (cooling system overhaul, suspension, ignition). I'll have to take another look then but this is the rear of the trans, I dont see how oil can end up there

Thanks so much for posting these. It is a great resource, especially for a new owner of a 04 330ci! when I stop the car I can smell that tell tale oil burning smell. Do you have any suggestion where I should look first in this symptom? Valve cover Gasket? I know I have a transmission oil leak from somewhere up in front like the main shaft seal. unfortunately.
thanks again paulo985

Ok, so update : I have changed my coolant expansion tank... but im still having a leak. Its coming from the seam where the upper radiator hose connects into the radiator. The upper hose has 2 connections.. one goes to the radiator and the small one to the expansion tank. The small one is not seating properly into the male connector of the tank.

Also, when i take it for a short drive, i can see steam forming up and evaporated from somewhere beneath the upper hose....Help needed!!!

Oil on Thermostat Housing

Looking down to the 'stat housing from the top, I can see what looks like oil on and around the electrical connection.

Looking at it from under the car, I see more oil on the bottom of the 'stat housing. Could that be from when the mechanical fan failed? I can't figure out where else it the oil could be coming from.

Valve cover gasket new.

Thanks!

^^Take some brake cleaner and spray that area down and wipe it all away real well and see if more seems to appear. If none, it was some residual seepage from something else. If there's fresh oil trace it back to where it came from.

Clean it first, and see if it comes back. If it does, it's most likely a bad VANOS line, or the last person to remove the VANOS line didn't use new crush washers.

True, Leak 101 calls for cleaning the area then monitoring to see where it is coming from.

Here's a negative review on the Bear radiator, for those thinking of going the aftermarket route.

Can anyone tell me what part this is?

Noticed a burning oil smell recently and for the first time today it started to give off a white smoke coming from that exact part where the leak is shown.

Also, the image appears to have uploaded sideways, it should be rotated clockwise. For reference, it is on the passenger side by the smog pump air injection check valve.

Edit: It's the O2 sensor.. Could the oil just be coming from a valve cover gasket leak?

Get it on a lift. My leak was from the detent covers. Cheap part, incredibly expensive repair. I'll DIY it one day.

Also look at rear main seal

Yep. It gets down on the heat shield then burns off.

Replacing the valve cover gasket is pretty easy and cheap to do.

Sounds like the valve cover gasket to me. Meistersatz and Genuine BMW are both ACM rubber gaskets, which makes them preferable to the rest.

Great thread! My 99 318i with the M43B19 is leaking. Not the trans; either power steering or engine oil. Need to do some cleaning and checking.
