Heat only hot while driving.

Hello everybody I am new to the group. I have searched old threads but just couldn't find exactly the answer I was looking for. I have a 00 323i my heat only gets hot when I accelerate, The anti-freeze is full and the car only over heated one time I have left it just sit and idle with heat on and off a few different times and it never overheats. Any help would be greatly appreciated its starting to get cold out lol. Thanks in advance.

First, properly bleed your cooling system, and verify there aren't clogs in your heater core.

Second, check the headgasket.

Check your expansion tank for damage and make sure your coolant level floater is there. If its damaged, there's a decent chance a part of it got stuck in the heater valve, and possibly some in the heater core. Bleed your system on an upward slope.

Also verify your thermostat is not weak.

See 3rd link below in my signature. Just because the coolant temp gauge is in the center, does not mean the engine is running at the proper temperature.

Thanks for the fast replys. I do have the floater and it is reading full, but I will definitely try bleeding the system and check expansion tank.

Re: Heat only hot while driving.

And if it is thermostat how bad of a job is it on these cars? This is the first BMW I have owned I'm not familiar with them at all. They are definitely a breed of their own.

Do your wipers slow down when you give it gas? Just kidding, sounds like the 1940s all over again.

Thermostat. Mine failed enough for the car to get luke warm while driving, but not enough for good heat. Of course you know it failed while I'm about 20 minutes from Canada in January...

You have a leak somewhere. That has led to air in the system, which always finds it way to the heater core. Investigate, find leak, fix.

Brinkley that's exactly what is going on I just found the leak on my lunch break. Thanks a lot for the answer though I didn't know that small leak would create this much of a problem haha

Heat only hot while driving.

Your water pump could be failing. One of the main problems for bmw is the cooling system. I would say replace water pump and thermostat

Very common, but hard to locate leak is with the O-ring on the temperature sensor in the lower radiator hose. This O-ring needs to be replaced anyway, no tools needed. Just pinch the release tabs on sensor when the car is cold and remove. Very little coolant will leak out.

If there is any moisture on or under the sensor on the lower engine cover, the O-ring is leaking.

O-ring part number is below in my signature.

I think leak is on the top radiator hose. Will find out for sure after work.

It only overheated one time? Did you do anything after that happened? And when did it happen.

You didn't say mileage...might want to do more than just fix the one leaking spot while you have system open.

Therm is easy to do...but read mango's sticky and about 5 other cooling threads until you puke and feel cold inside. Read, read, puke, read, read, puke, read, spam, spam, eggs, and spam.

Next time it overheats, you need to do something...don't forget.

Hopefully you'll fix it this time. Lose your cooling system, lose your engine, pay more than the car cost to fix it...or read the cooling threads and fix your car. Read and puke...don't forget that either!
