Sorry for your loss that was a clean ride!
To the insurance company it's a 16 yr old car, I'm sure they will find a lot of '00 323's comps(in their eyes) in the 2-3k range for sale.... You might get $500 more for the great shape yours was in and another $500 for mileage but if you get $5k I want to know who your insured with so I can switch my policy to them...
I just started a policy with AAA and the max payout on my '01 325 is $3500. I have that much in pm in the last 12 months :-p

I hear what your saying and you may very well be right , I guess I'm venting , it just feels like this is really unfair to someone like myself who was a responsible person who took care of their vehicle. Being punished because I wasn't reckless like the average person probobly had 4 cars in the time I had mine. and society is totally ignorant about everything new is better media driven lies . A new car isn't so efficient if you look at the whole picture . the carbon footprint of my car is a lot lower than 4 newer more efficient ones that the average idiot would have destroyed in 16 years . People especially Americans which I am and my whole family was born here. Why does society always praise and encourage us to be the ignorant hippocrate .

I'm sure the car was worth $10k in your eyes and 92k is super low miles for a car that old but I don't think insurance companies will care. I just put ur car in top 3% condition on Kelly blue book and $3549 is what to expect with your mileage according to them not me. I redid it with 192k mileage and got $2400 private party sell, so they gave $1k premium for your mileage. They will use this also. Good luck!!!

Nicer? Maybe when new it was more $ model but nicer condition no.

Nicer i would disagree unless he never any bodywork or accident and he only serviced at the dealer and did every single recommended thing . I doubt it . The photos speak for themselves

Omg no wonder people crash into each other ever second. the Chevy trax they gave me as a rental has more blind spots than Hellen Keller . Ok that was bad but seriously. The e46 has good Visibility even the new 2016 328i I had as a loaner last service the visibility sucked .

The societal rants are a little ridiculous. You seem to think you're some exception to the majority culture. You're not.

My Ride: 2000 323i manual
When I saw this review back in 98' I told my aunt to get one and she did in May 00 then sold it to me in December 2013 . My father had an 85 535i manual he had for 15 years over 315,000 miles. I definitely don't want an automatic .

I'm sure your car was nice and you loved it but get real, 16 year old cars with histories of sub frame issues are not worth as much as you think it should be. I went through this a year ago with my 03 xi and got $7k, bought it back for $1100 and had it fixed. The car wasn't perfect but I didn't want another one that didn't have the repairs I had already made. Starter, front axles, alternator, cooling system etc.

How the heck did you break your foot from that? was your foot in a weird area/position? what did it hit?

I was hitting the break hard when the impact happened . Think about that . My foot absorbed the force of my body on impact decelerating from 40 mph in a short distance where my body moved before the seat belt became taught. Then the seatbelt was Where the most of the forces in stopping my body were focused , hurting my shoulder . Had I not been wearing the seat belt my leg probobly would have been broken worse Right before my body flying into the airbag steering wheel dashboard which would have been really bad possibly fatal.

Sorry to hear this, OP especially that you suffered an injury. I was in a very similar situation in 2013 when my 99 323i was rear ended on the freeway. Had the car since 2007 and took a good care of it, so it was in way above average condition when totaled.
The only thing I could do was to argue with the insurance adjuster who initially offered me $4K for the car. Yes, that would have been enough to buy one of the "comparable" cars for sale they dug out on Autotrader, except that some of those looked like they should be avoided even if offered for free.
So I went on Autotrader, found other, better examples priced higher, sent them my extensive maintenance record, pointed out flaws in their calculations... It took some time, but they eventually offered me $6K that I accepted.
If you are not in a hurry to receive compensation for your car (I suppose you have other things to worry about right now, having your leg broken) , this is what you should do - try to get a reasonable offer and then let them take the car. There's not much to be made by parting it out, but it's a lot of work. You can expect about $1,000 for the drive train. The interior might be in great shape, but grey isn't a color that is in high demand. The non-sport seats are also not sought after.

I'm saying is there is so much waste that people consider acceptable.
You say my situation is not in the minority here, that most people keep their vehicle 16 years , drive manual, and have no accidents in 16 years . Yes the car was bought in March 00. If that was true why is it so hard to find a manual shift car there are many articles saying how less that 10% of cars on the road in the USA, and even less being sold new . People think of cars as disposable and everything else we buy in our consumer based society. Everything revolves around product obsolescence and marketing . These company's claim they care about the environment is total bunk !!! Things are designed to need replacing sooner and Your either ignorant or a sales associate from bmw! Yea I speak the truth.
