Sometimes No Fuel Pressure, Not Pump

Lately my 2003 330xi has been having an issue where sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't. I have checked and when it does not start, there is no fuel pressure at the fuel rail. It is not the pump/filter because that was replaced the other day at a dealer. It just happened to work afterwards. I doubt it is a fuse issue because it is not completely dead and I will be checking the relay when I get home today. It seems to not start when it is cold out (<32 F), but that could just be coincidence.

Please help.

Swap the horn and fuel pump relay and see what happens.

Fuel pump relay should typically by changed or swapped with the horn relay when the pump is replaced.

Ok thanks, so far that is my only thought because it is not completely dead like most people encounter.

I don't know if it is related, but lately my central locking with the key fob has not always worked as it should. Some times I have unlock the doors/trunk with the actual key.

How old is the battery? Google "BMW E46 hidden obc functions" and use test #9 to check you voltages. Definitely swap out the relay as jfoj recommended.

Pull your back seat up and verify they actually replaced the pump with a new one.

Hi, have the same issues on a 320ci, pump, filter, relay swaps, cps sensor, spark plugs, no CEL or codes on INPA and jump start all done, still no start. Before car would start and immediately die. How did you end up fixing this? Or can anyone help?

Try a different key and also check to see if there is power to the pump while cranking the engine. NOTE, that there will be around 11.2-11.4 Volts at the fuel pump while cranking, this is normal.

Thanks for the response, only have one key unfortunately. However my other e46 with two keys, the faulty key will not crank, and the engine in the case of the non starting car is just about to turn over, string crank.

Pump is running when I switch ignition on (for about 8 seconds) and again when engine is cranking. I had replaced the pump thinking this was the issue, when I connect the older pump out of the tank, I can confirm the pump is getting power.

I have checked the EBox fuses as well for continuity and even visually inspected them, still no go. In checking around for the issue, I noticed the Fuel Pressure vacuum line was disconnected from the knuckle close to the MAF which I reconnected, but still no go. I have not got a fuel pressure tester but when i use a pin to press the Schrader valve after cranking, fuel flows out. Not squirts out or jets out, but flows out....

Would this be pointing towards low fuel pressure? When I first changed the filter thinking the filter was clogged, car ran after a couple of hard cranks and failed starts. Left it idling for about 15 min, then rolled off the driveway for a test drive. There was absolutely no power, until it eventually died 50m up the road. Would not restart and hasnt started since then.

Sorry for the long post
