Not an ideal first car because it has 333hp. Have you considered an E46 ZHP?

Forget the ZHP cuz you're gonna crash that. Get a Civic, or a Prius, or both

The maintenance on an M3 would be killer, plus the insurance will cost you more than the cars worth because you're a new driver.

If you want something sporty like an M3, a 325ci or 330ci will still be plenty quick and you won't have to deal with horrible maintenance and insurance costs.

Don't listen to all these fools, if you want to get the car, go for it. Just know that theirs a **** ton of responsibility involved. Research is your best friend. If you fit the bill of an irresponsible 15 year old, then my comments will follow all these guys. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt

If you saved up $10k on the way to buying an M3, and instead bought a $5k 323i (cause chicks don't know the difference) and put the rest in a mutual fund at 8% interest..... you would have $269,390.92 at 65 years old.

Is your M3 worth $269,390.92?

Can yall stop being "Bmw owners"? Bunch of jerks. One of the problems on this forum, is if someone has the slightest issue, yall exploit it like the kid has done something to your family. Thanks to the few who have respect

Yipp. That's why I default to m3forum. They're a much more agreeable crowd.

Listen to me: DO NOT buy an m3 as your first car. This has nothing to do with too much hp or anything like that. This has strictly to do with it's going to ruin any financial stability and and saving habits that you've built so far. Whether e36 or otherwise, just get something much easier to build and something that won't suck you dry. Trust me, once you feel it you're going to want to spend every penny in upgrades to make the car look better and go faster, then altering the engine and other components will put stress on the car, especially if you drive anything like I did at 16, and you WILL dump everything you can possibly make at 16. You're not making 50+k a year and splitting rent and other expenses so you have expendable cash to fix these issues. You should go subi for your first car. Easy to work on, all wheel drive (not sure if that will matter where you live or not) cheap to work on, cheaper to insure (depending) boosted (+300 points) much more practical and has a great resale value. You can pick up a nice 07 wrx or even like an 05-06 Sti for the same price and you can have a lot of fun tuning it and learning how to handle torque steer and other fun things that come with fast cars. Take care of it then sell it for an m3 at a reputable dealership, or otherwise, then you have your dream car by the time you're old enough to drink legally! Cheers!

This has been beatin to death. You're not going to want to hear this but no its an awful choice for a first vehicle. Super high maintenance costs, complicated to work on if youre inexperienced and very fast for 16yo. I got mine when I was 18, almost had e36m as first car but ended up with 323ci (I know). In hindsight I would've died if I would've had an m3 as a first car. There's just way too many things that can happen when you have 333hp ready at the tap of your foot. That being said, I know you will disagree and still try to get one because I did too. Good luck, find a good one and take care of it. AND BE CAREFUL, cops will have no remorse for a 16 yo kid in his flashy lsb bimmer.

Edit: forgot maybe the most important part. It's EXPENSIVE AS HELL compared to even a non-m bmw. At any time your savings can be completly wiped out for something as simple as a flat tire or shot vanos hub. Ask me how I know

05-06 STIs are still expensive as hell, and needs a responsible hand

Most agreed, however, maintenance and cost of maintenance are not comparable to an e46 m3 IMO
