I'm 19 years old about to be 20 and I just bought a white 1999 328i manual transmission in October 2006. I never knew how to drive a manual and I learned using this car. Before I had a 1988 Toyota Camry and I am just LOVING my Bimmer....BIG upgrade. I think the main reason I love it so much is because I paid for all of it. Not like other people my age who drive around their parents car. I just bought a lip spoiler that I didn't install yet and I plan on painting the mouldings, buying new tail lights, and tinting the windows. Does anyone have any suggestions about painting the mouldings? I have a friend who says I can do it myself but I don't know if it would look bad.....any suggestions? Should I just have a professional do it? If so, how much would that cost? I really don't know much about cars and I'm just starting to learn but I know many people here know what their doing.

Also, I'm looking for places near Fremont that specialize in Bimmers because the dealership is sometimes more than a 19 year-old can afford. I had my front brakes replaced recently for $435 at Wheel Works, I had my window regulator replaced at the dealership for a little over $300, I replaced my rack and pinion and my power steering hose replaced at wheel works (forgot how much), and had my drive belts replaced at the dealership. I was wondering if anyone knew a place that's good with Bimmers that's less expensive than the dealership.

Here's a pic of the car now:

I haven't done anything to the exterior yet. This is how it looked when I bought it.

Welcome to the Forum. I just sold my 99328I. Had the car for 4+ years and loved it. But funny thing was I had to replace the exact same things you had too. From what I hear they're pretty common failures on the 99 models. But the good thing is after 120k+ miles nothing major and I just sold the car to a BMW Master Tech and after his inspection he found no major issues either.
So it should be a great car for you for years to come. Even though I upgraded to an 04 M3 and love it, I still miss my other one sometimes. Mainly when I look at the gas mileage on the onboard computer!
Take care.

This thread feels a little like MySpAcE :eeps: but welcome to the forum. Oh and go w/ the LED tailights, the 2nd pic that you showed

I just bought the LED tail lights and got trunk lights too (of course). Still waiting for them to arrive. YAY! I hope I can install them. I'm sure I'll figure it out. And...I just put in guage rings today during my lunch break :) . And...in addition to the things I said I'd buy on my first post, I also plan on buying a new front bumper, tinting the windows, and buying new headlights. If you guys have suggestions, let me know.

Also, I never attached my lip spoiler. One friend told me I had to clean the area with rubbing alcohol first and another friend told me to buy this one product that removes wax. Does anyone know of the product?

Welcome to the board.

From Fremont too.

I was gonna get an LED Tail Light too, but I got the regular lights instead. My wife drives my BMW most of the time, do you let your husband drive yours?

Have fun with the car.

Of course. He's the one who picked it out and drove it home because I didn't know how to drive a manual yet. He drove it 90% of the time while he was visiting me. Then after he left, I was forced to drive it...now I love it. He's a marine so he doesn't live with me yet but when he gets out, this will be my main car because he has his own main car. He used to drive a civic si but we recently bought him an Audi A4 because the civic si had too many problems and the Audi is a practical car.
