So i have a 99 328i i bought when i was 16 and i have always wanted to do a m3 swap. im now 22 and getting the ball rolling. here is my progress after a couple days.
pic 1 is a pile of junk parts i got.
2 can someone say tow motor?
3 shows the exhaust removed (its for sale 99 328i exhaust 200 obo)
4 is the heatsheilds that were next
5 is a pic of me cleaning up the rocks after taking down the heat shelds (so i can still creep without locking up the wheels)
the last pic is just a pic of my car how it sits. lots of room to work huh
the first two pics are of my headers on the S54. do you think i should replace them? its a small dent, no puncutre though..
the next few pics just more progresss and the last one is how i had the jack in there, actually worked better than i thought. also got the steering column out today. all thats left on the tear down is cisconnect everything from the motor and pull out the motor and trans
Haha, I'm almost positive jeppej's sedan does not have power windows. That is part of the reason he didn't worrie about that issue.
What I'm planning on doing is using the body harness from the sedan and the engine harness from the M3. Although I'm not exzactly sure if this will work or how it will work, if someone has more info on this please let me know.
Anyone have any advise on what to do with that dented header? Will it effect anything or should I just leave it as is?
forgot to mention i got the stering column out a couple days ago (and big surpise its for sale now), the interior is completly empty now with the exception of the heater core and wires.
I also got some misc. things dissconnected form the engine, almost ready to tear it out. hopefullly it will be out thursday. im busy today but will try to get evertying disconnected tom. and get a crane over there thrusday to pull the motor/trans
a pic of my friends scrambler, we just put a new tranny in it yesterday its ready for more wheelies! (no jokes, has had 4 driveshafts and 3 trannys in 12k miles.)
go phillies (notice the reflection of the licence plate on the driveway, and the dog had to run infront of me as i tried to snap a pic but i think it added to it...)
also forgot to mention im thinking of doing a full custom interior my mom is a seemstress and will be able to help me out. im just trying to figure out what materials i want to use and the most important what color to use... also want to paint my engine bay LSB and my exterior AW. so if i do that the interior will match. although i wont be painting the exterior until after i weld on the WB
what are you doing that is making it more unique? i see your sig says something about 2008 conversion? you plan on putting e90 body pieces on it? also what are you doing with the wiring??
started taking connections off the engine yesterday, took me about an hour to get two connections off (one being the throttle cable) then after finnaly getting thoes two off i gave up for the day... just wasnt feeling it
Can someone please give me some advice on things i should replace or mod while my car is completely appart...
what i mean is what am i going to want to end up doing down the road that will be 10x harder once the parts are in the car?
i plan on replacing most of the suspension bushings, SS brake and clutch lines, reinforcing the subfame. but what else should i do while everthing is easy to get to??
also if you could suggest a company to get these items from it would be great.. thanks in advance
Also dont forget to replace the Guibo and center bearing and diff cover with bushings and the new diff bolts. You can get all OEM parts from getbmwparts.com or thebmwpartstore.com
the center bearing in the guibo? also replace the diff cover?? really?? i didnt know they were prone to failure. or are you saying replace the diff bushings?
im confused....
also i will be replacing every bolt in the suspension. my m3 parts are completely seperate, the guy a got them from had them completely appart. and did not give me any of the bolts.
I don't remember reading about you doing the front M3 suspension, but even if you stay non M fitament up front I'm pretty sure you can get the M3 front stingray underpan and M3 FCAB carriers with non-M bushings. It should all bolt right up to your front suspension and create more structural ridgity replacing that tubular triangle in your picture on page 1. That or even get the non-M stingray pan.
If your front control arms are loose replace those and do the inner and outer tierods. Could do the steering guibo too.
Correct! I am using the complete drivetrain and suspension from M3 basicly everything from M3 minus the body, interior and axel back exhaust (I'm not cuting my spare well)
I asked people to tell me what M3 stuff I should replace while its easy to get at rather than reusing from my donor car. And have to replace it in a few years when its much harder to get to.
0-60 suggested I replace that bearing because its easy to get to now. But in the future I would have to drop the exhaust, heat sheids, and driveshaft. Ext.
This is just the info I want to kno. What to replace or upgrade now while everything is appart. And what is ok to be left alone (the stuff that's easy to replace when the car is assembled)
The milage on my donor car is 40k mi.
but If its something that will need replaced by 100k I would rather do it now and get it over with while its easy to do
