Windshield leak after professional install

Hi all,

After 15 years of driving I finally got my first rock chip, two weeks after picking up my first car in 15 years, my 03 330. The chip quickly turned into a crack, and then a larger crack.

I took it to a very well reviewed independent auto glass shop to have the windshield replaced with a PWG model. The OEM molding they used had a defect they noticed after install. So they offered to reseat it in a couple weeks after the glue hardened.

I was disappointing, but oh well. After looking at it closer, the job looks terrible. The interior trim isn't tucked in, the edge of the glass shows on the outside, and now water is leaking down the A pillar, and it rains a lot here.

I'm hesitant to take it back to this company if this is they work they do, but am pretty sure BMW dealers outsource this kind of work, so even if I take it to them it might end up back there. Also they said it was OEM trim, but it didn't quite look right, the corners especially, but it seems like it should be wider as the edge of the window and body show at some points.

Just looking for e46f's insights into this sort of thing. I'm gathering facts before I go back to the company asking them to make this right.

Take it back. Speak to the owner/manager. Tell them you chose them due to their positive reviews and you wouldn't want to have to post a bad review (with pics) due to this one seemingly isolated issue. Treat them as if you're giving them the benefit of the doubt due to their reviews. You may be surprised at the service you get from that point. However, if they treat you poorly, then flame on!

Thanks, I pretty much have that exact email drafted up. I just wanted to see if there was anything about windshields or OEM molding I should know before hand.

I went to Apple Auto Glass. I'm still a little torn between going back to them or just heading to Collision Auto Glass, they were recommended after I reached out to Pacific Motorsports and it looks like they do specialize in euro's. (Really wish I'd seen this first http://www.collisionautoglass.com/BMW_Page.html)

I am on my third window in my 328i/2000. All were put in correctly, no leaks, with BMW seals. First time by the Dealer who just out-sourced it to an independent shop. Other times directly with independent. First 2 windows were BMW, after that I got an aftermarket window for various reasons (not cost).
My question for you is if you noticed the bad job immediately and the shop confirmed that, they should have correctly it right away, and should not be paid until job is done right.
NOW--you will find out how good of a shop they are. Take it back to them and a good shop will correct it to make everything right, at no cost to you. I would not threaten them with saying you are going to doing anything. You say it is a good shop, lets see, I am assuming the will make good.

Apple Autoglass was/is huge in Canada. That was a pretty terrible window job. You might want to park it inside until it's fixed so that water doesn't drip onto you LCM or GM

Also, a professional can usually still cut out the glass in one piece years after it is installed. No excuses for them to make it right.

I didn't feel comfortable having them do the work again so I asked them for a refund. They were up front about the issue and offered to fix it themselves, but I only had to ask once for the refund and they honored it. I'm scheduling a new install this week with the previously linked shop. Unfortunately, the Sunday after the install was one of the rainiest days of the month and I hadn't noticed it leaking yet. It did leak again is slight rain yesterday morning, but its been pretty dry since then and should be dry today. Hoping to get a quick appointment.

I don't think this is the same apple auto glass. I'm pretty sure this is Portland, OR only and they just happen to have the same name. I talked to the owner (as listed by the BBB) and it was a Portland area code.

Thanks for the help guys, I think this should be resolved this week.
