I like that idea! I guess it's best if it's a relative you rarely visit using your car though.

Lost My Only Key to My E46

If you need a spare solely to unlock the doors and not start it, plenty of cheap blank keys can be found online or under $15. Have a locksmith cut it emphasizing that you are not asking them to program it to start the car. You only want a physical copy made.

Welp.. I found my key.. couple hours after ordering a new diamond key fob for $190. I tried ordering a regular without the remote but for some reason they said that they aren't able to order one for my car and my only choices were either the valet key or the diamond key fob.

Quick question, what are the chances of me being able to cancel my order for the new key fob after a day ordering it?

The valet keys aren't programmed, right? They can start the car though.

Yeah they can. It just won't open the glove box or the trunk I think.

ONly one of my remote keys still work, I'd keep the new one coming .. Youll need it eventually, the remote part only activates the central locking, the EWS is powered by the rf signal so you can manually open the driver door witht eh key and start the car.. At least thats what I'm doing with my 06 330xi right now.

Thing is that I've been planning on selling my car for a while now since I need the money for my tuition and now I just spent an extra $190 for no apparent reason. Another thing that was rather strange was when they told me they couldn't order the key without the remote. I really hope I wasn't duped by them into buying the more expensive key.

As of build date 10/2003 there were only 2 key options vs the previous years 3 key options.

The plastic Service/Wallet key was probably not available for your car.

So the only option would be the keyfob and Valet key.

Doubt you could cancel the order for the keyfob due to the quick process they use when keys are ordered, usually if the key is ordered at the counter before 11 am Mon-Thurs and the parts guys get the order submitted in a timely manner, the dealer will have the key before 12 noon the next day.

The dealership told me the plastic key IS the valet key and my only option was to either get the plastic key or the keyfob.

You need to re train both keys at same time. You can find instructions online or youtube its very simple

Dealer is WRONG!

Plastic key is NOT the Valet key, it is considered the Spare/Wallet key.

The Valet key has a plastic head and a metal blade, the Spare/Wallet key is all plastic.

Again, you have to be careful about listening to the parts guys, they seem to get the key thing screwed up often.

You have a 2003, likely it is a later 2003 and there are only 2 key options, Keyfob and Valet key, the Spare/Wallet key was dropped somewhere mid 2003.
