Engine rattle

I'm trying to find out where this rattle is coming from. I've used a stethoscope but cannot pinpoint where it is coming from.

It's an 05 325i with m56. There isn't any metal in the oil. I know some of the noise is the injectors.

Any thoughts.....
Thanks.

Sounds like valve train noise. What oil is in the engine? Do you get the car out on the highway at least once a week? These cars like to run: they were designed for the autobahn.

BMW 5-30 oil. It gets out on the highway.
I can hear the noise with the stethoscope when I put it on the disa, intake manifold.
When I put it on the valvecover or vanos I can't hear it.
It also sounds like it resonates through the exhaust cause I can hear it from the back of the car.
I will take a better video and post.
Thank you for your input.

Have you inspected the DISA?

Pull the Disa and see what shape it's in.

Engine rattle

I have had the disa out a few times previously. I have had the rattle for some time. Just haven't addressed it till now. Have been working on other things with the car. I will pull the disa out and inspect again.

I will run it hard the next few days. See what happens.

Thank you.

I have had the noise for some time. I can't remember it being this loud. I do recall it not being as loud previously. I have used only BMW oil and Castrol 0-30. It seemed louder with the castrol vs the BMW oil, but not that loud. I will pay closer attention.

I typically don't have the windows rolled down so I don't hear it that often....

Engine rattle

Here is a video from cold start this morning. I apologize for the basic pitch black video. Was in a rush. I will post better ones in the future.

I will definitely pull that disa out tonight. Sounds like it's chattering. Only when cold though. I did unplug it and it made no difference in the clack sound.

SAP seems pretty noisy as well.

Thanks to all who have contributed. I will keep plugging at it

So I pulled the disa...... turns out it's not even a BMW part. Aftermarket. Not sure what brand as it only has a few numbers on it.

Flap still has tension and it still holds vacuum. Flap has the beginning of
Some wiggle so I ordered a new one..... still trying to to locate the noise coming from passenger side.

Unplug the connector for the disa. See if the noise disappears

Oil level is good. I check every time I get gas. Hasn't run low on oil to my knowledge.
Ran the inpa rough test to see if it was a specific cylinder I could narrow it down to but the noise did not change.
Checked the spark plugs and made sure they weren't loose.
It's looking like I will have to open the valve cover up and go from there.
Thanks to all who tried to help.

Sounds like at least one bearing issue, and possibly a bad CCV or Idle Control Valve.

From a cold start, pull the A/C fan belt and listen. If a noise goes away, check the related pulleys.

Then pull the drive belt and listen. If a noise goes away, check the related pulleys, water and power steering pumps.

When was the last time you checked the CCV? The last time you cleaned the Idle Control Valve?

I will definitely pull the belts and listen. Haven't tried that yet. Should have done that a long time ago.

I cleaned the icv last year.
Engine is m56. Ya I know. That was my fist mistake So the CCV is incorporated into the valve cover.

So I will try the belts and report back. Thank you for replying.

Hopefully it's in one of the drive accessories, if not it sounds like piston slap or a rod bearing.

The sound is a bit deep pitch for this, but check to make sure the heat shields on the exhaust manifold gaskets are not rattling. Those heat shields are riveted to the gasket and tend to start rattling after 12-15 years. There is also a heat shield attached to the body down below the cats that can get shockingly noisy. It is easy to tighten, the ones on the exhaust manifold gaskets are a bear to get to or to do anything about unless you are pulling the manifolds and replacing the gaskets.
