My Ride: is not yet fast.
Key with internals - $10 shipped
Ak90 - $55 shipped
Key cutting labor - $10-$20
Key coding labor - Free
Downsides is that shipping takes a while initially, and you do not get a genuine quality key. But for being run over by a car, it's doing pretty well.

So last Saturday when leaving work my car had a no crank no start condition I tried to diagnose on the side of the road. No luck . Left car on back road shoulder came back Sunday to try more no luck confirmed I had fuel to the rail and electric to the starter main connection and jumped the starter directly no spark had it towed home to search more and figured that it was ews related issue? ? Had it towed to a local indie they came to conclusion I needed a key total 231.25 for diagnosis and key key was 180 $ and then tow costs 120!

they could have stuck your key in the key reader for service advisors and told you what the vin saved on it/ews/dme was and great mystery would have been solved in 3 minutes.

I just paid $151.69 shipped, from the bmwminipartstore. Sent them a copy of my DL and title. Piece of cake. Now if the local dealer will just replace the airbags, it will be sorted out for a day or two.

Was the key programmed and cut at that price? Ready to use or does it need to be programmed after you received it?

The key is cut and will start the car, the only "programming" that is required is to learn the keyfob to the car which takes no tools or software.

Put the key in the ignition and start the car as long as the locks and/or EWS have not been swapped on the car at some point!

I just got a new diamond key from a local mobile lock smith for $125 + tax = $132.00. The new key functions just like my old key and it's an OE BMW key too. He also cut me an emergency key for free so I hopefully I won't need to break the rear tail light. This key can open and lock the doors and trunk but can't start the car. The funny thing is he never asked for proof of ownership. The entire process took 30 minutes. With 2 keys, I can utilize the seat memory function since sometimes the wife drives my car. If anyone in the twin cities need a new duplicate key, PM me for his contact.

Where do you get the internals? And how viable is this? Can anyone tell me?

Also, still nothing on online options for Canadians?

Online option??? Well having done the bmwminipartstore key replacement I wouldn't really call the process online. Basically you complete a form with credit card info which goes to a person at a dealer service counter. They then request a scan of the docs and you get the key in the mail.

Almost identical to the process I went thru with Budd's BMW in oakville. Emailed a service guy a request for a key, he emailed back to attach pics of the ownership and my license and credit card info. Called me in a few days to pick up the key. I'm sure I could have asked them to courier it to me but that was less convenient.

Don't see much diff in the processes. The price at the Canadian dealer 8 years ago was about $300 can. A few months ago I paid bmwminipartstore $167 us (about $215 can).

You do know there are only 2 or 3 key options for the E46?
The Master Key aka keyfob.
The Valet Key which will NOT open the glove box or the trunk. You really do not what this key IMHO.
The Spare Key aka wallet key which is 100% plastic and is not something you would use often, it will start the car. These are only available up to 10/2003 build dates as I recall.

Suggest you purchase a keyfob, EVERY E46 owner needs 2 working keyfobs. Trust me on this.

Valet/Service key part number - 51217124770
Spare key (wallet key) part number up to 10/2003 - 51218213932
Master key/keyfob part number - 66126955750 superseded by 66126955748, the 48 key is the current part number based on my last info.
