Hi guys I'm new to the forum and am looking into getting an e46 very soon. I'm looking into this 2004 325i and love it. When should I look at and be aware about when inspecting it?

It looks like a nice find. It has the SULV motor though. If you have read the first post, you can find out about these motors. Even though it looks real clean and nice, Personally I would look for another one, one without a SULV motor, but thats just me. If you bought it, its likely that it could go several more years. You could drive it until the fuel pump goes out, then part the car out.

Try a search on this site and you'll find some info - I do know they're less desirable than the typical E46 325i w/ the M54 motor. This one has the M56 SULEV - Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle.

More info here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M56

The last pic gives it away - the engine looks different.

Not to be a stickler but I would pass on this one because of several things, not just the engine. Even if the condition was immaculate and it had lots of maintenance records, it has almost no packages or options. Looks like just the Premium Package. I would not buy one w/o the Sport Package and Xenon headlights, at a minimum. There are other package/options as well that were available that it doesn't has. There are lots of 325i's out there...

Just my .02.

Read the first post on this thread. I know its a lot. It goes into all these things. If you do read it, you will be much more informed and most likely will be able to get a car that you would be more happy with.

Yeah I read it after you told me. Appreciate it. I'll continue my search. I don't have much to spend sadly. What would you consider good mileage on an old e46? I tend to get a little worried seeing old bmws with mileage over 100,000 :/ that's just me though. I have around 8k to spend

My opinion--the sport package is a must, but the xenon headlights aren't. My '02 330Ci has the sport/premium/manual combo, but doesn't have the xenon headlights. It still illuminates the road fine, and bulb replacements are cheap as chips. I wouldn't say this is a deal killer, and Xenons can be retrofitted fairly easily (but again, I haven't felt the need to).

This thread has been on point guys.......I read, took the advise and my E46 work has been super easy.

I laugh at people that think you can just buy a 100-200k for $4000 and think your good to go. These cars can be reliable as hell, but people dump them for cheap for a reason. If your not a DIYer or hands on type........either be ready to spend some serious cash for maintenance or just buy a Honda.

My Ride: Jet Black 5spd e46
I bought a jet black 01' 325i with the sport package and 5spd.

The weather has been horrible the whole time I have owned it which is part of the reason I bought it. After its nice out I plan on bringing a 12 pack to my detailer friend and having him help me clean her up.

any good resource for cleaning out all of the drain holes on the front end and trunk area?

My Ride: 2005 325Ci convert
I'm reading this forum about 3 months too late. Bought a 2005 325 Ci convertible in August as I wanted to finish my life in a convertible. So far, oil leaks, gps stopped working, some of the leds out in one tail light, glove box lock (fixed), Don't know if the wipers work properly yet or not (seemed like they did once but not the second time). Took 2 months to find some center wheel covers (original $100 to $ 125 each. Found some plastic ones for $15, one lost less than 100 miles (Screw was still there). Drives nice although just feels old.

Still less than what I sold a 06 pick-up for. Trying to decide if it should be a Sunday afternoon car or trust it enough for trips. Tires are marginal for wear, one out of balance and noisy, so needs new tires unless for occasional use.

The 323i, despite having a 2.5l engine was still named 323i for marketing reasons.
Heated seats were one of those options that could have been ordered separately without any packages. This is the case on my car also.

Just my $0.02

I feel like my new 330ci is a mix of at least 2 of these
I have heated seats and headlights warming
But I also have the sports seats up out along with a few other things.

This is a great list of information and I will keep looking.

Does aftermarket take down the value? Like I mean an aftermarket exhaust for example. Thanks.
