you email them you registration, proof of ownership, and vin. They pass it on to BMW which fedex the key to you in like two days. They go off the vin so the key is cut and programmed for your ews. You just need to do the remote programming to get the lock/unlock/trunk buttons working.

I was told BMW is trying to shut off the internet ordering of keys, if you find someone that still does it feel fortunate, the place I got my deal from would accept the info through email to get the key on order but stated I had to pick it up in person. I got one from ECS tuning last year, now it says no longer available on their site.

Be careful on the keyfob part number, it recently was changed to 66126955748
from 66126955750. And yes the superseded part number has a lower number than the old, original part number.

No idea why the part number was superseded, maybe a different supplier for the raw key?

if this is used, does local dealer need to program to car, or can it be done yourself?

The key comes already programed to your VIN, you need to do a simple sync procedure for your car to recognize the key.

No, it is not impossible. You will have to provide your VIN number and proof of ownership (some places let you fax those) and they order the key from BMW. It arrives pre-programmed and all you do is sync it. I bought a non-remote key from BMW of Bowling Green, KY for $40.00; I think the remote key from them is $130.00. I would get keys online but I try to buy from that dealer whenever I can because their parts prices are less than 1/2 of BMW of Nashville.

And no the 10 key limit is a lie, for the most part. It should be clarified that it actually means you can only have 10 keys existing at a single point in time that will start your car but who needs 10 at one time?

However in theory, you can have an unlimited amount of keys for your car, but only 10 will start them. The others can wait around until you lose one.

My buddy has an E39 that has its very last key fob. It has nothing to do with people needing 10 keys at one time; it has to with POs and lost keys.

how was vin given?

1. Get in and CLOSE all the doors.

2. Put the key in the ignition and switch momentarily to position 1 (leave in this position not more than 5 seconds) then turn the key back to the off position.

3. Remove the key.

4. On the key transmitter, press and CONTINUE TO HOLD unlock button. Press and releas lock button three times within 10 seconds while still HOLDING the unlocked button.

5. Released the unlock button

6. Doors should lock, then unlock to acknowledge that key was recognized.

7. Program additional keys before leaving the car or turning the ignition on.

Fantastic, thanks!

They go through a slew of questions during checkout.

Make, model, yr, VIN... I have not heard back from them yet, we will see.
