It is an Athena Coopering/cut ring head gasket. A friend ordered it for me with his parts order, but they are available through PPF, VAC, Achilles, FCP or most Athena gasket stockists.

No hair cutting lol, he backed out of the bet as soon as he made it

Not much progress in the last 3 weeks, have been back on it this weekend though. Now that it isn't a daily, work has to take priority

Have bought a nice piece of 250 x 650 x 80mm aluminium to redo the sump I have predrilled the sump to block holes, should hopefully get it on the mill or borer this week

Getting the engine mount done today. With RHD the engine mount and steering column form a bit of a problem area, so I have relocated the mount to be inline with the column, probably not a bad cheat for other RHD owners looking at turbo

Also made an exhaust vanos delete, would still like to go bigger on cams eventually, but will get it going as is for now.

35.5 kg of aluminium, most of that will end in the scrap bin lol. The joys of going so custom . It would actually be cheaper to buy a sump, but the mains girdle and longer studs mean that the dry sumps that are produced won't fit

I'm confused on the exhaust VANOS delete. What will hold the spline on the camshaft?

Also, I've found that UUC engine mount to be really frail. I just pulled mine out last night, and it's deformed after only a couple of thousand kms of driving. The closer to the engine you place the mount, the more force that will be applied, and it will "wear" out quicker.

The spline is no longer used. If you look at the picture with the vanos parts disassembled, you will also see the bolts are now shoulder bolts at the camshaft end. The new machined piece has holes instead of slots, this stops the movement, and I have added a spacer to replace the spring to compress and tighten the parts back to the camshaft. I have been considering removing the helix and adding a bolt and washer to further secure it. Exhaust timing was set by position of the holes, exhaust/ intake cam can still be adjusted using the vanos tool. It took a lot of set up and measuring, but I have confirmed exhaust timing via dial indicator at tdc. I avoided using the helix as I have had it slip once in the past when I installed the Schrick cams.

I have been considering changing the engine mounts, I have had the UUC ones for a while now, they have seemed to have "softened" with time. Must do some research on what is available and recommended now Although the engine mount will be working harder, replacing it more frequently will easily offset the pain not doing this mod would cause. It will be accessible to replace. The mount plus steering column just form a blockage, bringing them inline has just opened a heap of room that I could really take advantage of. I have had thoughts of using a dampener at the top of the engine to body to offset the position of the mount possibly, but will check a new set as preventative maintenance and see how reliable that side is first.

I probably haven't explained the locked vanos well again. The replacement "disc" has 6 tight holes instead of 6 slots. The 3 larger holes position the disc to the camshaft via the shoulder screws, and then also positions the cam to crank sprocket via the threaded holes in that sprocket once the screws are threaded in. Unfortunately I have limited photos of the actual install.

Checkout Black Forest industries they just released engine mounts for e46. They look to be well engineered and not just a piece of poly with a bolt through it.

They look a bit like vibra technics engine mounts.

But maybe even better shielded from heat.

Little update while thread has bumped up the list.

Link G4 Fury wired into the car. Massive job as I decided to remove redundant wiring, relays, SSG remnants, etc from the body loom and relocate engine bay electrical items to the cabin. Hidden all the headlight, external temp, thermofan, etc wiring through the upper chassis rails (rail that guards bolt to), and made new engine harness.

New additions:
E46 M3 dash (for higher rpm tacho)
Egt sensors
Wideband O2
Map sensor
Pressure sensors for oil and fuel
Ethanol sensor
New Bosch NTC sensors for coolant and oil
LS2 truck coils
Reworked chassis mounted shifter

Have spent quite a lot of time on the car over recent weeks, getting closer and closer to completion, but also taking the time to do things 100%

Sounds like a lot of hours of lots of thought and planning.

Will love to see this beast on the road.

Davew,

How hard is it to get a M3 Cluster to work?

I am having help with the M3 cluster. But as the DME is gone, I am not concerned with the vin, so will likely code the LCM vin to match the cluster. At the moment it has the tamper dot.

Oil pressure switch, oil level switch, oil temp all go direct to cluster, as does processed wheel speed from dsc. The Link will provide rpm via an output, and basic can bus functions will be through the Link ecu.

I will have to confirm all this when the engine is running.
