I'm glad that everyone recognizes that. Does your mom?

Speaking as someone who only has about three years left with our youngest at home, I can sympathize, but it's odd to fixate on a diseased cat as the substitute for for a house full of kids. Life has phases--it's time for her and your dad to enjoy the next phase.

She has mentioned the family ties involving this cat, so yea, we all are well aware.

I'm 30 and my brother is 25. She still tries to helicopter mom. We love her to death, but my mother is a complicated woman and my dad is a saint for dealing with it.

She still has 2 cats, one is healthy and happy, the other is 10 and has near-total kidney failure. They hook her to an IV bag every other night and pump it full of fluids to keep it alive. I don't agree with this level of care for an animal, but at least that cat has a good quality of life and she isn't terrified of the impending death every day.

Yeah, people are complicated. This just makes me feel bad for your mom, as it sounds like she probably recognizes that her behavior is not healthy but doesn't have the capacity at this point to change it.

There is no help for your mom or you, so stay out of the situation and let it pan out. Her loss if it impacts her ability to enjoy her retirement.

Bring home another younger, robust cat to kick this cat's ass into oblivion, then it won't be your fault or hers, it will be the new cats. As the old one passes away, she can take comfort and joy in the fact that a new cat is now there.
This. Plus your mom is beta af

Bring your mom something nice and heavy as a gift, like an anvil or a boat anchor. Put a nice bow on it. Bring it to her and "trip" and accidentally "drop" the heavy item on the cat's head. Apologize for the "accident" and say, "oh, well, it's for the best, Mom. She was ready to go anyhow." You're welcome.

Get your mom a dog. Not only will she be happier in the long run, but she'll now have an animal that actually loves her and your cat problem should be resolved fairly quickly.

I switch out the cat that looks just like it but healthy. You can say its a miracle hes healthy. Also pick a young lookalike cat. Your mom will say this cat 40 and still alive 20yrs from now.

I will investigate your identity and send this thread to your mom as evidence if you should ever try to murder the cat.

Don't do it. It's not your decision to make. This problem will take care of itself soon enough.
