2002 320d Touring - turbo replacement

Our 320d has ticked over 300000 miles... I think, on it's original turbo. Not without some problems in the last 10000 or so - sudden drops in boost, seeming air leaks (foot down - more turbo noise, no go) and similar.

I have a Turbo Dynamics turbo to do a like-for-like replacement.

I'm confident that it is possible to do this from under the car, but is it easier to remove the inlet manifold and do it from the top?

Tips and advice very gratefully received.

Given there is little new with regard to these cars, I've kept looking for an answer.

The links to tis.spaghetticode.org are long gone unfortunately, but this thread answers the first question, and gives a run down on others. Unfortunately (for me) working outside when it keeps raining (it's that time of year, here) isn't much fun.
