My Ride: BMW 328i 2000
E46 2000 issues

What's up everyone I'm new here and I have a few questions if anyone can help me better understand these cars. I recently bought a BMW 328i 2000 140k miles, everything seems pretty good in good condition I just have few issues like both headlights flickering multiple times which I'm going to check ballast to see if it's that if not Can anyone suggest on what it might be. Also both My tail lights light up on dash board and they stay on I can't seem to figure out why when all light bulbs work Also my turn signal blinker won't stay on, socket and lightbulb are all fine and even works and blinks to make a turn but other then that it doesn't stay on with my headlights like the other side does Any suggestions?? On what it could be??

Start with checking the ground on the tail lights. That is most likely the reason your lights aren't working properly.

I have same year 328. Your tail light problem. Is most likely your.wire harness that runs from the trunk into the lid. You'll noticed in the loom that leads into the lid there will be broken wires with tiny breaks. I redid my whole harness. Problems gone.

Your flickering, is more than likely an aftermarket hid unit yes? Does it only flicker when lights are off?

The ground wire for each rear taillight is located on the wiring harness. Ground in a BMW is always brown. Early sedans were recalled because the taillight ground wire couldn't handle the current. Call the local dealer to see if the car was fixed.

here is a thread that has info and links to the tail light ground. also how that caused (for him) the head light flickering. either way good bet your early sedan needs a better grounding wire for the tail lights

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...l+light+ground

one last thing. hate to be the bearer of bad news but the 328 has a very bad reputation for having the rear floor crack where the mounts for the differential cage go. it's nicknamed the "subframe" or RACP (rear axle carrier panel). if your car never had the tail light fix from BMW i doubt it had the panel fixed either. so be careful as it's not covered anymore by BMW and it can cost $1,200-$3000 private party to fix if it cracks severely.

Unplug the tail light harness and check to see if the plug is melted! It's common for them to cause a short and melt the plastic! If it is then, there's your problem! The metal pins are touching due to the melted plastic... It's usually the ground (brown) wire that will cause a short! Have you checked to see if your license plate lights work? Your dashboard will also light up if they are not working! As far as the front head lights flickering... If an HID kit was installed double check that all wires are making good contact... They might not be getting enough power so will flicker...

On my 2000 328ci I had the rear taillight indicator lighting up on the dash yet the taillight was working properly. I eventually cured the problem by replacing one of the taillight bulbs. Sometimes you will find the contact on a light bulb just needs to be cleaned up and it's best to check each one.

After a few weeks the indicator on my dash began to light up again. I ended up replacing the entire taillight assembly with a genuine BMW replacement which included all new bulbs and I have not had the rear taillight indicator light up on the dash since. I found the cost for the taillight assembly was not too expensive especially considering it included all bulbs.

Not a fan of aftermarket HID kits, at all. Everyone who i know that has had them retrofitted has had nothing but trouble. Whether it's from the lights not working, to other motorists giving the middle finger because of the brightness, or from negative Police attention (Australian police are notoriously picky with anything modified on a car)

I agree, I prefer them on Hondas. The halo eyes are better looking on a BMW in my opinion

What did you find when you split open the trunk wiring harness boot and looked at the wiring?
