The Future of GoPro

What do you think will happen with GoPro? It's practically a household name. Any small action camera is often referred to as a "GoPro" regardless of brand. But they have been sucking lately. I recently bought the Hero5 and was very disappointed with it - the battery self discharged about 10% per day, the screen had dead pixels, the video quality in anything but 4k/30 and 1080/30 was very weird and blurry, and the firmware update through the app didn't work at all. I quickly returned it.

Think they will ever make a comeback?

Well yeah, duh. I guess the question is will we come out of this just rich, or super rich?

Will probably sell for pennies on the dollar to a big brand, probably Sony. Nikon is too poor to buy them and is in deep financial trouble themselves. GoPro was poorly managed by idiots that thought you can keep selling a subpar product at an astronomical price. They came out with new products that were the same, and continuously screwed their retailers. They are definitely going to zero.

And yet Apple continues to thrive on the same business model. I don't think GoPro is going anywhere any time soon but the IPO was severely overvalued.

Apple makes money because of their OS, their support network, their quality, and their itunes. Their model is solid. GOPRO's model is flaky at best. They had a great product when it first came out, then the product stagnated, and the competition came flooding out. They didn't drop the price, they continued to gouge and spend all the money on marketing, which failed them. They were too late to the drone market and didn't execute, and let the mavic get all the glory. They will continue to float around like a tumbleweed, but they will be dead soon enough. Phones being waterproofed, cameras getting smaller, 4k cameras getting smaller, pen cameras, etc all going to finish them off. GoPro knew they were going to get knocked off, and decided to become a media company, in the hopes that the brand/media would be enough to keep loyal customers. Sadly, people aren't interested in paying a heap of money for an action cam and all the accessories. Too little too late.

But they don't make the actual camera, they just assemble the box.

As long as Timnson gets his cut from E46 Fan Bois buying the stock, it's all good.

Apple makes products that have a mass appeal, they are consistently reliable, they make products users regular want AND want to upgrade but most importantly (and the main differentiator) is that apple has something unique (their OS, that improves the user experience) and something others have been unable to copy. I own a GoPro, but don't have the desire to get a new one every time they release a new one. The GoPro is also extremely overpriced for what it is. If it was no different than apple, they would be doing very well.

1. It's still a good product.
2. Apple hasn't dropped their price sure, but people still buy them. The next one is going to be over $1,000 and you better believe people will buy it.
3. How has Apple Marketing failed???

First of all, Apple is not a one product company. Second, the action cam market is limited, whereas the phone/computer market is vast and broad. I feel you guys are comparing the two companies for fun. They are nothing alike. Nobody looks at a photo and is impressed "wow, it was edited on an imac?" Apple doesn't brand themselves like that either. While there are some hipsters that treat apple products as a lifestyle, most consumers simply want them for their ease of use and quality, and a nice design. GoPro didn't have the safe formula as apple, they had a strategy similar to the minidisc.

GoPro was for a niche market, and they thought all these xtreme peeps would keep on buying the next model they put out...nope. They failed to really innovate or expand before everyone else caught up, one trick pony company that will be just a name in someone's portfolio soon.

THose are not only a fraction of their ads, but again, a fraction of their market. This was used to also showcase the capability of their camera and their processor. The gopro "be a hero" implied that you'd be badass if you just film yourself on it. Showcasing a feature of your product (like the iphone camera, waterproofness, etc) is NOT the same thing as trying to become an online version of ESPN or something.
