This thread reminds me of a PBS documentary of the life of Leonardo DaVinci.

Stunningly brilliant.

The trans back together, and the engine getting buttoned up in August:

This is the manifold to measure transmission fluid pressure and temperature prior to the oil cooler:

From August until March, I don't really have any pictures to share. Most of the remaining work in August was "rework", installing the engine and transmission back in the car.

In September and October I started considering a swap to either an automatic like a built TH400 transmission, or a 4L85E. I also very strongly considered swapping to a T56 Magnum manual transmission, as a fellow BMW enthusiast was removing his setup from his car to swap to a TH400.

In early November I finally got the car back on the road for further testing and tuning. The result was horrible. The transmission still didn't hold the power, even at 5 PSI, and the shift characteristic between gears was worse. I took the car out for a few last test drives, then put it up on jack stands for the winter.

In late November I decided to convert the car to a "stock" BMW manual transmission, and started gather parts. (Digging through my parts bins, shelves, and researching OEM bits) Because I had doubts about the condition of the single ZF S5D 320Z transmission I had on the shelf, I ordered 3 more from a salvage source in Maryland:

So out came the engine and transmission again:

As some of you may know, I have had a Steed Speed Twinscroll manifold on the shelf for a little while.

Mocking up and adding sensors to the manifold before installation:

Comparison of T3 single scroll 0.82 A/R housing, and T4 twin scroll 1.06 A/R housing for the GTX3076R:

The new twin scroll housing was so big, I had to completely rethink how to bolt the exhaust housing onto the CRHA, and also the turbo onto the manifold.

I had to source shorter housing bolts, and fabricate a new oil drain fitting:

6 EGT Sensors from Motec, 8 stainless bungs, 2 Exhaust backpressure sensor kits, and 5 high speed air temp sensors:

Bungs welded on:

EGT Sensors installed, and exhaust back pressure hard lines bent to fit:

Installing the turbo:

A little explaining on the sensors:

The EGT placed on each exhaust port will show variance in temp between cylinders. If the timing is the same, and the temperature is different between cylinders, this means there is either a difference in fuelling (AFR), or a difference in mass-flow through a cylinder. Normally EGTs are used to "trim" the fueling between cylinders to take into account differences in exhaust and intake manifold runners. (Mass flow efficiency)

I am using 2 exhaust back pressure sensors to measure the 2 banks in the twin scroll manifold. Because of differences in runner length and shape, I'm interested to know how the manifold "loads" the turbine housing in each scroll.

The fast air temp sensors are to replace the Bosch units which I find to have very slow response. (Can take several seconds to measure a 20 degree variance in air temp, and they get heat soaked) Here I'm adding adapters to the sensors to thread them into the re-tapped (From M12X1.5 to 1/4" NPT) sensor bungs on charge pipes:

As a nice side affect, the new sensors use a DTM connector which I vastly prefer over the Bosch LK connector.

For those that did't catch it in an image above, I'm using a Clutch Masters FX850 twin disc clutch.

The new CAE shifter piled unceremoniously into my passenger seat:

Removing the automatic stuff from the center console:

What it looks like under the car:

Center console trim modified and back in place:

For those that are curious about this shifter: IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!

I haven't driven the car yet, but it is an absolute joy to shift the transmission while stationary....

Fabricating a new transmission mount out of steel (Stronger than aluminum) from scratch:

WG fitment is tight:

Re-fabricating (Tacking together with MIG) the exhaust for the new turbo location:

Ready for TIG welding:

So that brings things up to date.

The driveshaft and rear section of exhaust is installed, I just need to finish the downpipe and WG pipe to button things up under the car.

In the engine compartment, I need a new engine mount to fit the 4" intake back in, which I'm sourcing from CES Motorsport. (Who I bought the Steed Speed from) Then theres a bit more fab on the charge pipes, fitting of sensors, and redoing a bit of wiring for the connectors, as well as adding the rest of the Water / Meth system that was never installed in the first place.

Once the car is back on the ground (Probably a June proposition at this rate) I'll be able to break in the clutch, and take it for it's first proper dyno session.
