Technically the 265/35/18 fits the 9.5" wheel best on paper. Now when it comes to your e46, the 255/35/18 will have a slight stretch in the sidewall, and that will help with fender clearance. The 265/35/18 tire may require your rear fenders to be rolled, but this ultimately depends on the type of tire, and your alignment specs. You are currently at stock ride height, so you have that working for you.
+1. Spot on. Based on your info, it looks like you have a 330i. The sedans have slightly less room in the back and the 255 is a better fit if you don't want to fuss with the fenders. 265s tend to work just fine on the coupes. I've owned both.
265s rubbed on fenders and the bumper (18x9.5 ET45). It depends on the tire too. Same size from two different manufacturers will fit differently . Michelin Super Sports seem quite chunky. I had to modify my fenders and the bumper but I'm loving the extra contact patch (my car has a bit more power than stock).
