This is amazing. Just curious, wondering hard future valve cover gasket jobs will be?

Got the transmission mount done, motor mounts should be finished up this week... My AWRON parts will hopefully be here early next week. My moton coil overs showed up today.. Will install those along with the complete front and rear sub frames out of a M3 Parts car we have here.

The motor generally fits pretty well in the car too be honest. I expect the outcome to look very factory, I dont anticipate many issues with regular engine maintenance.

How much does the incoming S85 weigh compared to the outgoing M54? Did you get a chance to put them on the scales?

Nice build so far! Will be following with interest.

M54 is 375 pounds and S85 is 529. Been looking into this for awhile. There are rumors that the S85 is lighter but an S54 is 478 so over all its only 51 pounds more.

That's quite a few more pounds over the front axle compared to the M54...... I love the swap; don't get me wrong, but it does illuminate why a lot of guys opt for the more compact, lighter LSx.

Its small beans when you compare it to an S54 at just 51 pounds difference. Its also costs way more then an LSx but when you put a non German engine in a German car it loses that bit of character that it did have.

The only bummer part of this thread is that the OP is not doing the work and a shop is. I was hoping to get an idea of just how much of a PITA it would be.

No I hear you on the character thing. There's nothing more mind-numbingly boring than an LSx swap into anything, IMO.

I didn't realize the weight difference between the M54 and S54 was so significant either. Iron block + ITBs I guess. Makes me reconsider my long-term goal of making an M3 sedan in favor of turbocharging, which would probably add less weight over the nose than an S54.

It looks like he's documenting things pretty thoroughly from a photographic standpoint, but it sounds like you want actual hands-on firsthand stories of how everything is hooking up...

Mainly the iron block. If you look at the weight of the M20's(400ish pounds) and M50's(440ish) they are heavy compared to the M54. Honestly a lightly turbo'ed M54 in an e30 would be a great combo. So yes weight wise you are on the spot on.

A little bit, the main part I'm looking for is the mounting of the engine/transmission. The wiring part being an IT nerd doesn't scare me. Once I'm done with the whole buying house I can look into this myself. Building a sleeper with a v10 would be very cool. The costs of these engines is also going down, that helps the cause.

Its far down the road. I've got an XI that has been a little bit of a PITA hopefully I'm done with that this weekend. Top end build on the ZHP, and an engine swap on a 83' 240D.

Busy week with the touring. Frame rail modification to clear A/C compressor, and "scalloping" the front sub frame to better clear the pan.

I hope to be able to post the pictures of the completed modified oil pan today.

Hah! Perfect Updates. Thanks Ryan.

Nothing wrong with being over built.

Looks some minor tweaking but over all not too bad.
