Listen to MPOWER, he hit the nail on the head. Miami is definitely a visit-for-a-day, not stay place. One thing he missed that I would HIGHLY suggest if you stay in the St. Pete/Clearwater/Tampa area, go to Busch Gardens if you're into that kinda thing. It's like a giant Safari zoo and a 5 star amusement park in one. I prefer it over trying to fight the sh*t show in Orlando(disney/universal/etc.), and if you are into beer, the Yuengling factory is literally 5 minutes away from BG and they do tours daily.

There is also the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa that is really nice and has a restaurant in called Council Oak that is absolutely amazing! Bring your monies for that though... Easily $200 for a dinner for 2.
There are also TONS of great restaurants in the what we call the tri-county area(basically clearwater/tampa/st.pete)

If you stay on Clearwater or St. pete beach, make sure you make your way down to John's Pass for a couple hours night or day. Quiet little boardwalk with shops and all kinds of stuff to eat and do. You can also rent jetskis there.

I dive all the time in St. Pete/clearwater, but we do it for the spearfishing... You're not gonna find diving there very nice, honestly. If you wanna dive and that's your main thing you wanna do, you need to go to West Palm Beach or Keywest... Just a really really long drive down there--I'd go with MPOWERS suggestion to stay in clearwater and drive to Sarasota and take that day trip down to key west. There is no better diving than Key West in Florida, I've tried it all...I wouldn't stay in Key West though.

Edit: Sorry for the suggestions about stuff you already dismissed, I went on a type-fest before reading your responses.

Hahaha it's okay, I appreciate the post. I'll definitely look into Busch garden it sounds interesting. I'd love to go diving

It's the red dot on this map. Easy access to Clearwater/St pete via HWY 60 and I275. Easy access north to Crystal River via Vetrans/Suncoast expressway. Easy access to I75 south to Ft Myers.

Any idea how much Busch graders is? Like is it equivalent to going to universal or like six flags?

But a lot of shops have become quite strict. Really lots to do and see from west coast to east coast, central Florida and down. Take your pick.

Yeah I chose Florida because it's somewhat close to us. She's always wanted to see nice beaches so I assumed that was the most practical place for us if we plan on driving.

You can get a city pass for just a few bucs more which admits you to 5 attractions, including Busch Gardens.

That 5 attraction city pass is definitely worth it, but I honestly would pass on Lowry Park zoo if you go to BG. The aquarium is really nice, nothing like the Georgia aquarium, but there are some great exhibits, and you can even spend an extra ~$20 to go backstage with 10 South African Penguins where you get to pet and play with them. My GF loved that experience, like me, she's an aquatic nut. The AQ is also right on Channelside which is full of bars, restaurants, and shops. I suggest Wet Willies for awesome(and loaded!) frozen drinks if you're coming in the summer.

Looks like MOSI is included in the pass too, which is actually right across from the University I graduated from. Depending on the time you visit, they will have different exhibits, but I've been to 5 of them, and they never fail to amaze.

I haven't been to the clearwater marine aquarium, but I've heard it's not nearly as good as FL AQ. The movie "Dolphin tale" is the reason this place is popular, so it's kind of a tourist trap.

OH! One thing I forgot that's REALLY cool if you're into art... The Dali museum in St. Pete houses the largest collection of Dalí's works outside Europe. It's also an amazing work of architecture:

OP, if you come to Tampa stay at the Epicurean and go to Berns for dinner. It's one hell of a steakhouse experience if you've never been.

If you take MP0WER's suggestion on Clearwater/St Petersburg, check out the Don CeSar hotel. It's the gem of the burg.

Being born and raised in Tampa, I will only ever go to a few places in Florida. I hate the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami/South Florida region.
1. Tampa Bay area (Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater, Sarasota)
2. Orlando for attractions
3. Key West for daycations with my wife
4. Tallahassee for my alma mater's events.

I'm so thankful for all the replies! I didn't think I'd get more than one, but y'all have helped me BIG time. I've made a list and I'm going to see what would be reasonable to do. Again thank you to everyone, especially MP0WER, boostedisbetter (you guys pretty much made my mind up for me). Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.

Another question, what's the best state for hiking? We have some pretty nice parks in Texas, but I'd like to go somewhere that's new.

It's definitely a really cool experience(make sure to take the tour, the wine cellar is insane) and the desert room is awesome even by itself(if you plan to go here, reserve a time a month in advance), but IMO there is better steak at council oak or Eddie V's. Charley's has good steak too, but I had bad experience there once and it really turned me off to it... You want everything PERFECT when you are spending $50-$70 on a steak.

My buddy works at Ocean Prime which is fantastic too. Also pricey, but really good dishes and drinks. There are g-wagons, lambos, bentleys, etc. in the parking lot literally every night. He's a server and easily pulls 100k/year.

Depends how much money you're willing to spend. Miami is my favorite, although side trips are nice as well. You can spend the day at the Spa at Aqualina, and the beach/restaurants as well. Take a day trip to the Everglades. Eat at some of the awesome food places in Miami, catch the food truck party, one night in south beach, maybe a trip to the keys.
