Question Oil level is fine but Oil Sensor light comes on anyway

My oil sensor light came on during my drive to work in this morning, about 45 miles one way, so I got a quart of oil before going to the office. I didn't put any oil in it as I wanted to check the level when the engine was cool. So I did that at lunch and my oil level was fine. I did a search on the oil sensor that comes on temporarily but mine just stayed on. I drove home and oil sensor warning light didn't come on at all. Would this indicate a bad sensor or could it be something else?

Normal oil light behavior:

Comes on red - Low oil pressure, shut off engine NOW!
Comes on yellow after shutting off car - A little low on oil. Add oil soon
Comes on yellow while driving - Significantly low on oil. Add ASAP!
Comes on yellow a few seconds after starting and then goes off after several seconds - Defective sensor. Check oil level manually until replaced.

If yours came on while driving, stayed on, and didn't recur after manual check that the level is OK I suspect that the sensor has one foot in the grave.

Bad sensor... it's common, and it went on mine as well. No biggie, simple fix.

Here's the diy for it, but it varies from the car's production date:

do you drive a lot of short trips?

if so it could be a condition caused by airated oil, and/or moisture in the oil.

when was the last time you had it changed?

if you dont want to spend the 100+ on it, next time you do an oil service, pull out the sensor, and blow it out with some compressed air. looked for build up in it etc. dry it out good, reinstall.

see if that helps. if it doesnt, replace it, but at least maybe you can save some money.

good luck.

Hate to revive and old thread like this but better than starting a new topic..

Do you have any more info on your statement about driving a lot of short trips? I find my oil light comes on after turning off the engine during random times. ie..

I drive to work in the morning all fine shut of car - no light.
I leave work drive home turn of car - no light.

Drive home to work roundtrip is a total of ~8km.

I leave later on that night and do a longer drive, engine warms up better i turn off car i get the light.

next day no oil light at all..

It does not seem to be consistent at all. Seems like when the engine gets hot it triggers it on shut down. I just added oil to it today and it was in the halfway mark between the two dips on the stick and just as I drove home from the mall and turned it off the light came on..

I know its not leaking that much as I hardly notice it on the ground when I leave where i park.

Find the leak, fix it. [Most likely SOLVED]

Yah, I did poke around in there and I'm pretty sure my OFH gasket is gone so come spring I will be changing that out as I can see the mess it has created back there.

But I just find it hard to believe this stupid light keeps getting triggered and I don't see any noticeable oil on the ground.
