I personally found starting lighter and working way my way up to more bold cigars helped my taste.

It's kinda like doing a scotch tasting, most will dilute with water so you can pick up the flavors better.

get some sampler/5 packs online, let them adjust in a humidor for a couple of weeks before you smoke them so you can try a good selection fairly fast. For a cheap easy humidor, get an airtight jar or container, buy a Boveda humidity pack and toss it in with the cigars.
