02 325XI rear end clunk?

I have an 2002 325XI automatic with 147,000 miles. I just bought the car and the previous owner put new bmw rear shocks and springs on the car. Now the problem is whenever I hit the smallest or the biggest bump I get a very noticeable clunk/rattling noise from the rear end of the car. it is very weird though because it almost sounds like it is coming from inside the car? the rear speakers are blown but I don't think two tiny speakers would be making that much noise. Where could this noise be coming from??. The car seems to handle fine and is pretty smoothe on the highway.

Same here, clunking noise over bumps and can hear as if it was something from the inside rear of car. I also just replaced the rear shocks and springs last summer but I reused the RSM and bump stops. I think this is the main culprit and will change these as weather permits.

Did previous owner reused the RSM (rear shock mounts)? Probably this is your problem too.

Check the obvious first. Tool kit components and fastener secure?
Battery secure ? Don't forget the spare tire well and it' s contents

Most likely I don't know for sure though . How to you check ? From the trunk or do you have to take the wheel off?

ZABBS22- very good description and I too have this issue... very interested to know your findings.

My situation- purchased 2003 330xi w/135k just before Christmas and didn't really notice any rear end noise during the test drive, but shortly after purchase while getting familiar and comparing to my previous 330i, I noticed a lot of noise coming from the rear...even over the smallest of bumps. Checking the maintenance records shows the rear shocks and trailing arm bushings were changed a year ago. The previous owner owns a transmission repair shop, wife drove it for 1.5yrs, and he kept records of all maintenance performed. Meaning, no mention of any other new parts. That said, what are the other key components to replace when changing the rear shocks?

That's what I pointed out earlier in this thread, RSM need to be replace and also get the reinforcements that sit on top of the shock. These are the main cause of thumping noise when going over bumps.

purchased new rear shock mounts and installed today. during the replacement i noticed that the previous installer incorrectly installed the larger washer which was 'riding' in the shock mount and casing a lot of noise. replaced and correctly oriented the parts...cannot believe how quiet the car is now!

although, while replacing the shock mounts i discovered that the wrong shock installation kit (boots/bumpers) were used and basically serve no purpose in preventing contaminants (salt, sand, etc***8230 from resting on the shock housing. so, it looks like i'll get a redo in the near future...ugh!

My 2005 325i e46 93,000 miles is doing the same thing. Just bought it a month ago culprit was the rear sway bars previous owner had it towed before amd they bent my sway bars ...
