Whine from engine bay while driving

Hi all,

For the past few weeks I have noticed a whine coming from the front end of my 318Ci it starts at around 30mph and gets louder as the speed increases. The strange thing is if I turn the wheel left slightly while driving the noise eases off.. I would really appreciate some advice thank you

check out your power steering fluid. Could be leaking. you can use a UV light and dye to find the leak and replace the part(s)

To be quite honest I haven't checked the power steering fluid level but I left a piece of cardboard under the car overnight and there appears to be no leaking. Just to ad more detail if I coast the car down a hill in neutral the noise is still there leaving me to suggest it not being the engine?

The e46 came with a bottom engine guard. If it's still in place it could mask the problem.

I would still look at the power steering fluid.

Whinning usually happens when a pump is starving for fluid.

I have a whistle in my car too, I've never heard it before until last night, it happens when accelerating. but it's very faint.

Just an update, I checked my ATF and it is not even touching the level in the bottle, also the fluid is brown. I will flush the system by the end of the week and hopefully this will solve it. Thank you for the responses

I actually just changed my power steering fluid and I know one of my pulleys are bad.

Sunny.

Get some ATF fluid and add it for now.

ATF does not get consumed or evaporate. You have a leak. Get some dye and a UV light. Not trying to scare you but if it's the high pressure hose that ruptures you might have a hard time steering.

Shifty, I would replace the bad pulley and see if your problem goes away.

I was planning to find exactly which pulley it was and see if it was the problem, even though the pulley only went after I changed my power steering fluid

Thanks, the problem is I have left the car for a coupe of days standing and I couldn't spot any drips on the ground? I'll top up the ATF but the strange thing is when I turn the wheel right at around 30mph onwards it is noisy but if I turn it left it is quiet

Wheel bearings?
Take it to a mechanic and get it diagnosed for free.
Not sure why forum people overlook the obvious.

I thought wheel bearings could be a factor so I jacked the front end up this morning and span both wheels, of course not being under any load this wouldn't make much difference but I also had a tug at both wheels and I found the driver side wheel had play in it while pulling the wheel left to right?

Try pulling from top and bottom. Left to right doesn't really diagnose a wheel bearing because it could just be the steering moving.

Have you tried different conditions to generate the noise? For example, try going 30mph in 1st or 2nd gear. If the noise persists its either engine or mechanical noise. If it goes away, its probably transmission noise.

Sorry I should have made myself more clear, I pulled all directions on both front wheels and the only wheel that had play was driver side with play in left anf right. As for engine conditions I explained earlier in the topic that I have coasted downhill in neutral and the noise is still there? Thanks

Wheel bearing will whine when it is going bad - -and classic test is to turn onto bad wheel and noise should get worse as you load it ... open window and try at 10-20 mph ...do not get cheap Chinese bearings to replace - tinker, skf or other reputable brand is fine if you don't want to pay for oem
