ECU announcements - EWS delete and MS45 cars

A couple of ECU related announcements:

1. EWS delete is now available from Epic on a SE46 tuned ECU! The cost is $200 and is available for both new and already sealed ECUs. Sealed ECUs must be returned to Epic for a re-flash, turnaround time is 3 to 5 days. Orders can be submitted via BimmerWorld, we're just waiting for the site to be updated with this option. Please note that this is not necessary and offers no performance benefits. It is being offered as an option due to popular request and a desire to more easily resolve issues of spare ECU, keyless start, EWS problems (of which we have not seen many), etc. Purely optional.

2. As many of you know, about halfway through the 2003 model year BMW switched from the MS43 to the MS45 ECU. Several other components were changed at the same time including oxygen sensors, MAF, and wiring harness. Our original intention was to offer SE46 tunes for both models, unfortunately after substantial evaluation there are significant differences between both the software and hardware that makes it difficult to achieve identical engine tune under all operating conditions. Spec E46 is committed to parity between all cars and learning from the mistakes of past spec classes (different displacement in SM, varying power and weight in SE30, different power levels in Spec Z) we are getting ahead of this issue before it becomes one and requiring that all cars run MS43 ECU and associated components. Fortunately there are very few late model cars racing today so the impact should be minimal. We recognize the hassle this will present for that handful of racers and will work with them to make the transition as easy as possible.

Fortunately it appears relatively straightforward to convert a MS45 car to MS43, with only the following components required:

- ECU (with EWS delete)
- oxygen sensors
- engine wiring harness

In the grand scheme of things, we feel this solution keeps the most equitable racing in SE46 possible without cutting out a large portion of the donor cars from our future.

Please note that we are in process of validating the conversion on a MS45 car so take this with a grain of salt until testing is complete, we'll post an update as soon as possible.

Fully agree. Parity will be kept really nicely with this change. Cost impact to new builds is small.

additional info: ms45 CAN be tuned, but between different software algorithms and different hardware it's difficult to guarantee that the same motor will produce sufficiently similar torque curves with both engine management systems. the last thing we need is a ms43 vs ms45 war where one is perceived to be better, that kind of thing can ruin a spec class. ms45 also has a different security mechanism which makes locking it down more problematic.

EWS Delete

I think that 200.00 to remove EWS is way too expensive.
A race ECU should never have EWS.
The flash should include the delete without any additional expense.

Look on ebay and you can find a complete ECU with a race flash and EWS delete for 125.00 delivered to your door.

I think the crank sensor is different as well on the ms45 vs 43, on the road now, but I can double check.
