Spec e46 Question

Can I buy a 3 series coupe and build to Spec e46 standards? or does it have to be a 330 by vin?

Thanks in advance!

It has been stated elsewhere in the forum by the rulemakers that the VIN will not be checked. As long as you build to the letter of the rules a chassis is just a chassis.

If you are buying local like I did you will have to deal with a fair amount of rust. The body only had a small amount of rust but the suspension pieces were pretty nasty. I have replaced the majority of the components under my car. Trailing arms, spindles, brake calipers, one axle. I found an automatic diff with the 3.46 ratio (can't afford a limited slip right now). Essentially even though I started with a 330, I still replaced a lot of the parts you would have to replace going from a whatever to 330 spec.

In my case it does sound like the law of diminishing returns but I had no way to transport an out of state purchase and I did manage to find a 330i 4 door, 5-speed with no sunroof within 10 miles of my home. It just needs a little TLC to get up to my standards.

Good luck!
