Hey guys. So the past few days my car had been having difficulty starting. It would always start, but it was a lot harder for the engine to turn over.
It's been pretty cold here so I thought it was the battery. I bought a new battery today and it wasn't that difficult for it to start (not normal super easy crank then start though). I drove home and parked.
Now I just went to Try and start my car and literally nothing. Everything in the car lights up, radio works, everything. I tried jumping it and still not even a click.
to be real sure your new battery is not defective, use the OBC hidden functions to monitor the voltage when you try to start the car. See if it plunges.
How about headlghts? Do you see them on strong even when trying to start?
If battery is OK, you can confirm it's the starter by seeing if you get battery voltage at the large starter terminal. You should measure this to engine ground rather than chassis ground.
If you are still good, then you need to measure the voltage at the small terminal of the starter when trying to start. If you get voltage, but no action, equals bad starter.

Yep it's the starter. Can someone give me a fair quote as to how much an indy shop should charge? A BMW-only indy quoted me $700 for refurb starter and install.
Please don't suggest DIY, i'm normally willing to do that, but not for this, too involved and TOO DAMN COLD!!
How did you conclude starter? Not saying it's not, but just curious.
If it was the starter, then you could still push start it...roll down a hill and pop the clutch. If it starts then, that's probably starter, but confirm the connections are good...confirm there's not corrosion in the electric system...on battery clamps (make sure they're tight...pull up on them), clean up corrosion on grounds, under + terminal.
Starters fail, but not that often...however, batteries and alternators go too...and a new battery does not mean it was fully charged...did you check voltage when you got the battery?
I'm having the exact same issue, bought a battery assuming that was the problem,
I can push start the car (so it can't be the fuel pump)
Battery is holding charge (so it can't be the alternator)
The car drives fine.
When I try to start it, it won't even click or even crank or attempt to turn over.
I assume it's the starter it's basically the only explanation.
Almost positive it's the starter. Went through this last week. I changed it myself from the top. Wasn't that bad. Starter cost me $212 which is a little high but got it in 24 hrs. Took me maybe 4 hrs work. Could do it in 3 next time, so I think $700 is pricy. Hope this helps
