Things I tried:
- disconnect and reconnect MAF connector.
- cleaned MAF with MAF cleaner spray.
- cleaned MAF connector.
- cleared code using pa soft 1.4 but keep coming back again.
Right now I can feel slightly more vibration when idle. Incidentally this code popped up after I solve my no-start problem caused by dud battery.
At this point I haven't tried swapping the MAF, because I don't have any spare.
See if PA Soft will display Live DME Data for your car, it often cannot.
If you can see Live DME data, report what the MAF reading is at idle.
PA Soft is pretty much a boat anchor for drivability issues as far as I am concerned.
Get an OBDII smart phone/tablet App and interface, typically $30 or less. These are far more useful for drivability and intermittent issue due to decent Logging capabilities.
Android - Touch Scan for $3.95 and ELM327 OBDII to Bluetooth interface.
iProduct - OBD Fusion for $9.95 and ELM327 OBDII to Wifi interface.
So i was able to connect once with my obd scanner. I attached the screenshot showing the trouble code page.
A few seconds after I start the car, the scanner lost connection to the car. I was able to reconnect after some tries with difficulty but it lost connection again when I started the car. Seems like i got a dud scanner too!!
Looks like I'm getting another obd scanner.
Meanwhile, any other idea i should try to fix this? Also can you comment on the exhaust solenoid problem reported that shown on the pic in my original post?
I have that obd for my other car. But i can't remember what type it is. But i remember trying to connect this tool to my bmw with torque app on my android but i wouldn't connect.

Do you recognize what kind obd tool i have?
I'll try connect it with the android suggested by jfof before deciding to buy from ebay. Since it will probably take a month shipping to my country.
Not sure why you are loosing the connection with the BT Dongle, maybe the battery is low/bad and the cranking Voltage drops too low.
Try plugging the BT Dongle in while the engine is running and see if you can get a Live/Realtime MAF reading in Grams/Sec. This would be useful to see what is happening with the MAF output to the DME.
I don't know the scanner doesnt do this with the other cars. The thing is i even had a hard time connecting scanner to vehicle protocol at on key position. I doubt the battery is bad since it's barely a month old.
Also it is not that the phone can't connect to the scanner, but rather the scanner can't communicate with the car's obd.. i will try connecting while the car's running this time.
I already ordered a new obd2 scanner. It takes a month to get delivered. So while I'm waiting is there anyway other than using the obd to determine that my maf is faulty?
I don't know anyone that can lend me their maf to try. Also in my country most of the e46 population is 318i
Not sure what you have going on with the OBDII adapter, it may not be fully plugged in or you may have to wiggle the unit around a bit. Try the adapter on another car and see if you have any luck.
As for the P0102 code, this means either the MAF has no output, the female terminals in the MAF connector are loose and need to be pinched closed or there is a wire broken in the harness between the MAF and the wiring box near the throttle body.
I figure my adapter is faulty. I already order 2 different adapters from ebay. I'm still waiting for them to get here.
I want to point out that this maf problem happened after i sprayed it with maf cleaner. I already tried unplug and plug in the maf connector few times but the code still came back. So how do i check whether there's problem with the harness?
Right now i drive it occasionally and i get very bad milage.
Yep my car still have problem with the maf. I still can't figure out whether the cause is the wire or the maf itself. As you know maf is expensive, i don't wanna spend money on the wrong part. Plus MAF is backorder item at my shop, so it can't be returned.
any idea is welcome.
