The AP2 can easily rev to 9k, people have done it plenty of times. The valves/retainers are actually stronger than an Ap1, and many upgrade their AP1s to AP2 retainers.

Why did they lower the limit? Just to keep the hp figures the same between generations or does the AP2 engine fall off earlier?

After 8200 the engine actually starts to lose power because honda shifted the power curve on the Ap2 slightly, however, many still want the 9200 rpm redline so they are ok with slight power decrease at the peak for a little more noise. Honda claims they did it because they wanted to shift the torque curve closer to the middle, but having driven both an ap1 and an ap2, to me, there is no appreciable midrange power worth mentioning. The perfect setup in my eyes engine wise for street driving is an AP1 with 4.56 gears in the diff, top speed drops to somewhere in the 130s but who cares, it literally becomes a go cart with even more insane response. Looking back at my car, thats what I should have done.

The retainers are probably the next thing I am going to get done to my car. Is it easy to DIY? The problem is I don't have a garage to work in, so I always just end up taking it to the shop.

What year was the changeover from AP1 to AP2 and when did production of S2K stop (or is Honda still making them)?

---obvious non-s2k owner too lazy to google

2004 was first year of AP2. Production ended in 2008. Both of those are in model years though so take that into account.

Because they stroked the engine from 84mm to 90mmm, and so a 9k rpm redline would have higher piston speeds/accel compared to the F20C, which already had astronomical piston speeds for a production car.

Definitely not an easy thing. Retainers and the billman timing chain tensioner is something you should definitely do.

So given this, it would seem that the F22 has really good over-rev protection then huh?

Yeah...not sure why anyone would pay damn near new car price for a used car when you can just buy the new one. The biggest reason for the value retention is that they don't make it or anything like it anymore.

I always forget that there was a MY09, production stopped that year and the number of MY09 units produced is really low and sales in the US were very few and far between.

Yes, the ap2 can take a money shift better than an ap1...although I wouldn't try it, but I think people said that it can probably hit 11k without damage.
