I'm interested to see how you've done this. I know for a fact that it plays through the head unit. When you start the car, the cluster sends a signal to the HU to play the chime via the stereo. For pre-09 cars without navigation, the a different chime is played through the dashboard. Back when I had my 06 325i, I installed a LCI HU and coded my cluster to get the chime going. My 07 335i convertible with navigation came factory with the chime.

This is true for E46s as well, not just E90s on? What does navigation have to do with it?

No. In the e46, the chime comes out of the dashboard only. That gong sound that everyone wants can only be produced by the stereo. There is no "buzzer" you can add (like the e39 gong).

You can add the E39 gong. I have it.

You think this chime is loud/noisy. You should hear the one in my 2016 mustang gt. It's so loud people can hear it two blocks away. I've already called the service center to see if I can have it TURNED OFF. It's totally useless.

Wow, I'm totally in for this - a DIY would be great.

Kinda laughing here, thinking about all the different sounds I could put for the chime. Would love to see the look on my friends' faces when WTF boom plays, lol.

OMG! Please add me to the list. That would be awsome. I absolutely have no idea to get it working.

Greetings from Germany!

This diy will change the e46 game forever. Does anybody else have an idea on what this entails?

E90 Start up chime

I would imagine it goes something like tapping into the signal for the stock beeper, then using that to trigger an Arduino or some other micro controller wired to the sound system to play a sound file.

If OP doesn't update soon I'm going to try to figure it out myself.

Quite correct sir. School has been rough and I haven't even looked at my write up DIY in a while.

I promise I'll get to it!

I feel school being rough... I'm taking 19 units this semester, ugh. It'll be well worth the wait for your write up though.

The sound is created at BMW, on a Mac notebook.
