My first cruise...Give me some pointers

Whats up everybody, in 2 weeks i will be taking my first cruise. I tried to do some research online but every review seems like its left by the company or a 60 year old with different ideas of fun then me.

With all that's been happening with Carnival I decided to give them a try and take advantage of the low rates. Me and my girlfriend are taking a 8 night cruise 1,140$ for BOTH of us from NYC(i hate flying) to San Juan, PR. St.Thomas USVI. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos.

So basically anybody who has been to those countries, been on a cruise, or anything that would help me make this vacation much better please leave it here!
Thank you Thank you

Unless you've been to those countries before, I'd do the excursions. Kind of pricey, but takes advantage of your limited time.

Sneak your own hard liquor if you want to save money. I bought a coke/shake card on Princess (Carnival higher line) and got virgin mixers (pina coladas, daiquiris, etc.) and poured my own rum in. We only bought one card and used it for both of us. After tipping often (see next line.) They don't even ask for it after the first day. (saved like $30 on buying 1 card instead of 2.) If it does not work out (it will) you can buy another card later.

Bring $100 in $1 bills. Tip everyone $1 at the buffets, poolside, etc. Bar auto tips your bill, but the guys bringing you cokes, etc don't get anything. You will be one of the few that care about them and they will remember you every day. I would order 2 cokes and 2 diet cokes for my wife and I with a coke card and give the guy a $1 and they would check on us all the time.

Book several upcharge resturants as soon as you get on the boat. (You can cancel within 24 hours of reservation.) They are like $15-25 each person and the food and service is 10x as good as normal free food on board.

Princess had anytime dining. If you can get that, do. It allows you to go to the dining room when you want not a pre-assigned time. It also allows you to sit alone instead of a group of the same people every night.

Turks and Caicos is a tiny little beach. I like it. You can go to Margarittaville or just relax on the beach for free.

Buy water shoes before your cruise (walmart, etc.) There are rocks in the water at some beaches.

Buy waterproof cameras and sd cards before the boat to save inflated prices.

You will get a newsletter every night for the next day. READ IT. It tells you all the times of the events, shows, etc.

Use sunscreen even when you don't need to. It is not very hot in the Caribbean, but you will still get burnt.

Room service is usually FREE for food. Enjoy!

Leave flashy jewelry and extra cash and extra credit cards on the ship. Sometimes you might find yourself in a sketchy area.

Take a ton of pictures.

Do NOT go to the ship doctor for ANYTHING related to puking, sickness, or diarrhea. You WILL get QUARANTINED for 24-48 hours as a prevention for spreading Norwalk virus. Go to your doctor before you go and get some Phenergan. You only need like 10. It will knock you out and stop you from puking if you get really sick (or drunk.) Also bring Aspirin, Tylenol, Zantec and Imodium.

SEARCH THE FORUM - There are tons of posts on cruises here.

PS - Your stops are all American or Americanized. You should have no real issues.

JMO - but I have been on like 10 cruises.

Glockman nailed it

I can't stress enough to make reservations for the "Dinner Club" dining. It costs $25 a person and it is pretty much the equivalent of a Capital Grille. If you are a big foodie, you can get away with ordering a few appetizers as well rather than one per person. Well well well well worth it. I ate here every other night when I went. It was that good.

+1 on bringing your own alcohol. Stuff it well in your luggage. The drinks on board suck with cheap alcohol and lousy bartenders.

been on 3 carnival cruises. Are you on the Liberty?

I did all those spots. 3 of them two months ago.

So awesome man. Just wrap plastic liquor bottles in your clothes and you'll be good to go.

It's a really simple vacation. No stress at all. There are not tricks to really know. Just get up early on the days at sea and claim some chairs. You'll have an awesome time. Treat all your staff nicely and they'll go out of your way.

At dinner you may see 5 things you want. Don't be scared to ask for all of them. I would get 2-3 entrees a night.

If you guys are big drinkers get the "cheers program". It's like $400 a person but it allows you 15 drinks a day. Most drinks you get will be about 7-11 dollars so it is worth it. I've had liquor bills well over that on my first two cruises.

If you have any questions let me know.

If you want to do an excursion on each island here are some ideas

San Juan, PR. - do the island tour. Don't book through the boat. Hope out and you'll be greeted by some tour guides. San Juan is kind of ehh but driving around and hearing about the history was pretty cool and it was only $20
St.Thomas USVI-Magans bay, mini power boats, shopping etc
Grand Turk-ride a boat to the sting rays
Turks and Caicos- Catamaran and snorkel and get drunk

You're going to relatively safe places so I wouldn't be worried. You can pretty much wonder around except for ST Thomas. It's poor as hell and all mountains so you'll need to get in a bus or something to get to the beach.

Just take a superpack of condoms. Thank me later. Everything else is pretty much standard. Most of the "traveling" can be done with help through the ship. The few people who decide to go out and do stuff are going to use Carnival's help so they are going to stick together. Depends on how you or your girl feel about doing your own thing.

We usually have sex 3 times a day when we see each other so I think 14 will be no problem
