Canadian-born Texas senator Cruz says he is eligible to be president

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/nationa...d8FIYbULtO5TRO

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Don't blame him for being born in Canada - come 2016.

Sen. Ted Cruz, the up-and-coming Texas Tea Party darling, made his best red, white and blue case for a broad interpretation of the Constitution regarding his eligibility as a presidential candidate while making his first trip to first-caucus state Iowa yesterday.

"My mother was born in Wilmington, Delaware. She's a US citizen, so I'm a US citizen," Cruz, 42, said on ABC's "This Week."

"I'm not going to engage in a legal debate," he continued. "The facts are clear. I can tell you where I was born and who my parents were. And then as a legal matter, others can worry about that. I'm not going to engage."

The Constitution says only natural-born citizens can hold the nation's highest office. Throughout his first term, many Republicans tried to make the case that Hawaiian-born President Obama couldn't serve as president, claiming he was really born overseas.

The Supreme Court hasn't ruled on the requirements to serve as president, although a congressional study found those born overseas to a US-citizen parent could serve.

Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, to a Cuban father and an American mother.

Cruz, who was stumping in Iowa and plans to host a New Hampshire fund-raiser, wouldn't say whether he'll run for president.

"We are having a national debate about which direction the country should go . . . and what I am doing now is trying to participate in that national debate," he said.
Straight from the GOP/Tea Party bubble.

so that means Obama, a US citizen "born in Kenya" can be POTUS too, right? Nah... GOP/TP birther movement wouldn't allow that...

Re: Canadian-born Texas senator Cruz says he is eligible to be president

Well, that would be the height of irony/hypocrisy should the self stated foreign born Tea Party standard bearer -- the same cabal that made/makes such hay of the tenuous and factless assertion that BHO is a foreign born usurper -- claim legal legitimacy to be POTUS.

I would just love to hear a fuller reasoning behind this.

If he's born in Canada and not on a US base I fail to see how he qualifies as a natural born citizen even if his mom was an American citizen.

Children of citizens are born citizens regardless of where they are born.

I am aware, but I do not know if it qualifies as a "natural born" citizen. IIRC the key on the McCain issue was that he was born on a US base in Panama.

The birther movement is a bunch of tin foil hat wearing kooks who have been given credence by Obama and his acolytes to act as a straw man.

One does not need to be born on an American base or Diplomatic property.

http://www.wisegeek.org/in-the-unite...rn-citizen.htm

The parent who gives the citizenship qualification must meet certain requirements.

so....why was McCain even an issue? If that link is true (not exactly a legal website) then it seems settled.

It never was. But we can all pretend that's what happened if it fits your narrative better.

Three of the links you posted are just fact checkers... one only prompts the question... and the one and only link that makes a case that he is not eligible is by one person in one article in the Michigan Law Review...

I don't remember entire news networks dedicating weeks on the subject. I don't recall Donald Trump getting on TV and Challenging McCain. I don't recall political "movements" hosting rallies questioning McCain's eligibility.

But hey, if it fits your narrative...

That's what the tea baggers need - a conservative all-Amurican candidate that was born in socialist Canada.

For someone claiming to be against racism, prejudice and profiling, you sure are quick to use vile, derogatory terms aren't you?
